Ultimate Hamburger Buns

I’ve been on a quest to make good hamburger buns for a while. My favorites are the ones at Fuddruckers. Crispy on the outside and soft and fluffy on the inside. These buns fit all those requirements. And they are so easy to make!

What you need:

  • 1 c. warm water
  • 2 T. oil
  • 3 c. flour
  • 1 T. sugar
  • 3/4 t. salt
  • 2 1/4 t. yeast

Add the ingredients listed in order into the bread machine. Run on the dough cycle. When it’s finished, take out the dough and separate into 9 balls. Form these into buns and place on a cookie sheet. Let rise in a warm place for 1 hour. Bake at 350F for 30 minutes or until buns look nice and brown.

  1. Wow! These look amazing! Do you know if these could be made without using a bread machine? Ever tried that?

    1. You should be able to. Just knead the dough for several minutes. Let it rise for about 30 minutes, punch down and knead again, rise again, and then follow the rest of the recipe(for into balls, rise again, then bake) If you try it, let us know!

  2. I just made this today and did not use the bread maker (not sure it is working right). It was relatively easy to do without it. I did let the yeast activate with the sugar and water then added all of the other ingredients. I found that I needed to add about 1/3 more water but maybe a tad less as I had to add a pinch or two more of flour. I then followed what Merissa said above w/ the rise for 30, punch down, knead, etc. They came out delicious!!

  3. I am trying these right now using my bread machine. I will check in after we eat dinner. Looking forward to trying them. Thank you for sharing the recipe. I have tried a few of your diy’s with great success. 🙂

  4. I just made these today and they were fabulous! I don’t have a bread machine so I just did the recommended steps of knead, rise, etc. Thank You!

  5. Hi! I’m stopping by from the gathering place! I’ve always wanted to make my own hamburger buns and this looks like a great recipe! I pinned it to my “FOODS-bread” board. Can’t wait to try it out thanks so much!

  6. I have tried this twice and it has failed miserably. I used ground wheat flour and coconut sugar but before I used just ground flour and it didn’t work either. I’m also at high altitude. Any suggestions?

    1. I’m not sure about high altitude baking but I do know that with fresh ground wheat you will need more flour than is called for here. How are they coming out? Too wet?

      1. No, they were very dense and didn’t rise. I’m going to try again because I’m not sure my yeast was good. Do you need the instant rise or bread machine yeast?

        1. I’ve always used the regular yeast for my bread recipes so nothing special. Maybe proof a little bit of your yeast first and see if it’s active?
