Ever since we moved into the "little house" I've been concerned with our water. Sure it passes "the test" but it doesn't always look quite right and sometimes even smells and tastes funny. Unfortunately we aren't on pure well water yet but community water in our current location. Even after we move though I want to have a reliable source of filtered water.
I heard about Berkey a few years ago when my co-op started selling them. It sounded like the perfect solution to my problem! Here's what I learned about them.
Berkey's are an "off the grid" water filteration system. That means they run without any kind of electricity or plumbing. Each Berkey filter system (besides the water bottles) are equipped with 2 Black Berkey Purification filters. Each set of these filters is rated to purify 6,000 gallons of water! The Berkey filter systems are created with 2 chambers, the water goes in the top and filters down to the bottom where the spigot is located.
Berkey filters range from holding 1.5 gallons (Travel Berkey) to holding 6 gallons (Crown Berkey). The size you chose will depend on your families size and your water needs. (One tip I have is to buy one a little larger than you think you might need because you might need the larger size in the future!) The number of elements in the Berkey is based on the size. The regular Berkeys are made with stainless steel, the Light Berkeys are made from a BPA-free plastic.
What exactly does the Berkey filter? Here's the short list: pathogenic bacteria, cysts and parasites while extracting chemicals including herbicides, pesticides, organic solvents, VOCs, detergents, cloudiness, silt, sediment, foul tastes and odors, cadmium, chromium, copper, lead, mercury, aluminum and other dangerous heavy metals, as well as nitrates and nitrites. And yet it still leaves in the healthful and beneficial minerals that your body needs. Isn't that amazing!
That means that you can filter water from; creeks, lakes, ponds & stagnant ponds, rain, rivers, springs, streams, tap water, water storage, wells, or pretty much anywhere! I know that gives me great security knowing that even if for some reason our well water or our community water went bad, we could still have fresh, healthy water! And if you think nothing will ever happen to your water, here's a little story for you....
Last year we had a fire get dangerously close to our home. Close as in, our family came and helped pack up everything in the car to leave. The fire trucks had to pull water from our community and all our water in our pipes started coming out black. It ran black for a day and then yellow for days afterwards. Thankfully we had water storage to get us through this time but I would have been very grateful for a Berkey during that time instead of having to depend on water we had on hand and someone else's shower!
I have a Royal Berkey (holds 3 gallons at a time). The size is supposed to be good for 4-6 people and even though there is only 3 of us right now I'm glad that I planned for the future. (Also nice to have filtered water for cooking or baking and not just drinking!)

We move all over the world and one consistent problem is having water that we want to drink. In some places the water tastes great, in others not so much, in all I wonder what the quality is like. A Berkey would be the perfect answer!
I would love to have one of these. Our water is really hard. When you boil water, there is always things floating on top of the water and a white film all over the pan that has to be scoured out. I can’t imagine what that does to our bodies.

Our water often has a funny taste and smell, based on the conditions of the lake it comes from. I dislike having to buy water whenever the lake “turns over”.

We would love this! Our town’s water is (and always has been) absolutely awful, and there are a lot of pesticides, incecticides, etc. used around here. We have three kiddos, all with different chronic conditions including asthma, allergies, severe eczema, epilepsy, etc. Filtering the water may help the kids, and it certainly wouldn’t hurt. We have used a water cooler for almost 10 years because we want clean water, tap water is pretty scary where we live right now. Is there a safe level of arsenic in water? I think not! A Berkley is amazing, but convincing my hubby that we should buy one would be harder than pulling a camel through the eye of a needle!

17 years ago we used a Berkey while living in India. We have a water cooler now, but really like the idea of having a Berkey to purify our water and not depend on a water service.

We have wanted one forever, but just haven’t had the extra money to purchase one yet! We had a baby this year, and would really like to keep him safe!
My children’s health is my number one reason for wanting a Berkey, I have just never had the extra money to get one. We filter our tap water with a Braun pitcher and I always think there is still invisible things floating around in there plus it’s plastic. So, I am probably only giving myself a false sense of “healthy” when I do that. We have had tasted water from a Berkey and you can tell the difference and I have had one on the wish list for a while now.
We have horrible water here on the farm. Very dirty looking. We have to buy water to cook and clean and to drink. We can’t do whites in the laundry either. This would be fantastic.

Lightning hit our town’s water supply power source and the municipality doesn’t yet have a backup generator. It took several days to get the pump working again, then several more after that to repair all the pipes that broke during the repressurization process. For a day or two. only essential businesses (hospitals, gas stations, grocery stores) were open. We had a “lesson” in preparedness. One thing that’s still missing from our gear: water purification system. Yours looks like a winner

I’d love to have one of these. Honestly I don’t trust the treatment and the filtration of the grid. I don’t want to fill landfills with plastic bottles, recycling plastic causes terrible emissions. We live in a rural area with a horrible public water system. To add to it, we have had constant issues with the water softner. We purchase filtered water in town and keep spigot jugs on the counter & fridge for drinking and cooking. I have thought for years, we should check into purchasing a Berkey.

Amazing giveaway. We live on well water on the Chesapeake. Which means we drink what flows into the Bay. I am always looking for safer/better alternatives to filtrate our water and this looks perfect!
We are moving to Alaska in January, and eventually buying some land and building our own “small house”. There’s only the two of us, and we just want to roll with the “have enough, but not too much” rule. I’ve been looking at the plans and construction for some small houses so that we have the information we will need, when we have the money to do it. A filtration system like this for us will be amazing while we’re still in cities, but also will be great for when we do eventually end up out on land – both of us being avid water drinkers, we want that peace of mind of knowing we’re not putting something harmful into our bodies. I may have entered before but I have been using some kind of filter for my drinking water for years. But even at that I believe the problems I have with stress fractures and my thyroid comes from the fluoride in our water since the 70′s. I had cancer in 07′ and beat third stage non-Hodgkin lymphoma. But these other things started after I didn’t die. LOL Doctors say we don’t get enough of it in the water to cause this yet all of my symptoms where listed to come from the fluoride. I said it’s accumulation and our bodies can’t throw it off. Well I am not able to work now and I still filter with one on my faucet. I can’t afford anything more expensive and you have to have water. Thank you I have never heard of this until I saw it on here.

I have seen these water purification systems in action. The water is crystal clear and tastes so fresh!

I grew up on subsistence living in the wilderness with my parents and grandparents. When my grandfather passed my grandmother had to sell the land and I’ve been modernized ever since. I go to “museums” to find the things I learned how to cook on, make ice cream, sew, do laundry, garden. My way of life, or the way I long to go back to, is so foreign to the rest of civilization now. We got our water from the stream off the mountain. The water was always clean and sweet. I have never tasted water that compares, not in bottles, not out of the tap. I want to take this filter to the mountains here in the lower 48 (I’m originally from Port Vita, Alaska) and find a new stream and remember home. I have three children to pass my memories down to and I want to share a part of my bliss with them. Re-reading this I would guess everyone would think I’m over 60. I’m 35. Filtering water a 1/2 gallon at a time with Brita pitcher is such a pain. Water here is poor quality, also…need to filter for everything, but would be happy with drinking/cooking water.
Being a single mother on a lower income, I can only afford to rent this old house we’re in. While it’s full of charm, it has many water issues. Besides low pressure, the water has a foul odor to it. I’m fairly certain that it’s sulfur, and/or sulfur eating bacteria. I am also not keen on the fluoride being pumped into the water supply….and God only knows what else.

These are my main reasons for needing the Berkey, for our health.
Having clean drinking water is one of the most critical factors in an emergency. A good water filtration system is essential.
I have done some research on filters and i am very interested in the Berkey system. The filtration system is streight forward. put the water in and you take the water out. I was impressed with the food coloring in the water and how it removed all the coloring. pluss i did futher research though a lot of reading on other brand names and decided that after all that reading i was very still convience that Berkey is the way to go. The end results are what Am after. PURE WATER to drink.
With a household of eight, there is no way we can store enough water to accomadate everyone in an emergency situation. We have city water, but we are placed under boil water advisories so often that we might as well not bother. We are even in the process of trying to find someone to dig us a well, but have recently been told that it is illegal to do so in our area. Checking into that. Perhaps if we don’t win, Jolly Old St. Nick will bring us one this year.
Family of 6 starting to get off the grid and this is definitely on our list of must haves!

I have been researching water purification for a long time now, and I have learned so much about what’s good and what’s a waste of time. These Berkey filters are so efficient and reliable. Pure water is a basic necessity that most of us take for granted. I have 12 children and need to know that we will have this fundamental need in case of any emergency, unfortunately, the cost is prohibitive as my husband earns a small salary as a teacher. To win one of these would be real peace of mind.

Our city water is rather nasty! We have an RO filter that was here when we bought the house, but I’d love to have a Berkey so the minerals aren’t filtered out.
Our water is fluoridated. I want the purest water for our family. The best start for our daughter.

My reason for wanting a Berkey system is our family’s desire for clean water. We’ve heard so much about Berkey and are anxious for a way to purify water.
Being prepared for anything seems more important than ever. Quality water filtration is important all the time, emergency or not.
We have a “camp” that we can go to in case of an emergency. Said camp has water, and plenty of it… but it’s down-stream from a place where they keep animals, and we’re unsure of the safety of it. We’ve been running through a rather old hand pump filter, which works fine but takes *hours* to get a gallon. A Berkley… wow, that’d be amazing. It would make being there so much easier, because now (ie no emergency) we’d no longer have to cart water in and later (ie emergency) we wouldn’t have to worry at all about water. Woot!
We have sulfur well water that is not drinkable or usable for cooking. A Berkey system would be greatly welcome at our house!

There are actually a couple of reasons why I would love to own a Berkey water filter. First and foremost, I want to be prepared for ANY situation where my water wont filter through my home system (we are on a well with a filtration system in the basement). I fear without electricity, the poor quality of our water, which is super high in Iron and Calcium, could make us very sick with toxicity.
The second reason I would love to have one, is to provide high quality drinking water to my family NOW. My husband has been buying water from the grocery store to drink because even though we have a filtration system, it is very old and doesnt get a lot of of the water. He is freaked out by the fact that when I boil water, you can see sediment floating around the top. HE is considering getting a Culligan water cooler! I just cant fathom the thought of spending money on drinking water!

Even with the filter attachment on our faucet I can still smell chlorine. I often wonder what other nasties we are ingesting on a daily basis. With this Berkey I could finally trust the water that we drink, this would be a dream come true.

Fingers crossed for a win here! I live in a very rural area and have well water, which I love… but will not drink. Why you say? Shortly after we purchased the property I had to change the well pump and tank. I have not drank the water since that day. I saw more gunk when I emptied that tank to move it than I care to remember, that’s when I thought “this stuff is in my drinking water!”. I am sure some of it was harmless minerals and just a natural occurrence but who knows and it was just gross. So, a Berkey would be a wonderful solution.

We live in FL and with hurricane season every year we always are getting boil water alerts or in the worse cases there is no water available. This is the perfect solution for those times. Additionally, I love the fact that it takes out all the chemicals from normal city drinking water. However, the best part is the way Berkey flavored water tastes! Yum! I don’t mind giving up my diet soda when I have Berkey water to drink.

We had a similar incident earlier this summer, with the fire dept. running the lines dry and allowing mud to back fill them. Our water came out of the pipes bright muddy red for more than 24 hours. Like you, we had water storage, so we pulled that out for everything!! It would have been nice to have had a filtration system like this one to use!!!

We would love a Berkey Water Filtration system because we live on a “farmette” surrounded by farmers who use all sorts of pesticides and chemicals to “treat” their crops. Being on a well, it’s only natural to assume that those chemicals will be leeched into the ground and eventually make their way into our drinking water. With babies in the house, and more to come, it would ease the mind knowing we all had safe, clean drinking water.

I used this type of filter on a daily basis when I lived and worked in East Africa. Presently, our water comes from the municipal supply (Atlanta) which is substandard. The water is taken from the river and then treated. Taste is awful and it smells heavily of chlorine especially so sometimes when waterworks do a larger than normal chlorine dump. I grew up on deep well water that came out of the tap at 40 degrees F and had a crisp, clean, fresh taste so it has been hard for me to drink any municipal water/treated water. I have been considering a water filter such as a Berkey.

Living on top of a mountain, my family has very few sources of water. These filters would help considerably with the issue of how pure they are.
I’d love to have one of these! We are on well water and heavily filtered now but when the power goes off we have no water. We do have a creek but it would need a non electric filterering system. This sounds like the way to go!

I would love a Berkey system. I can’t stand the smell or taste of chlorine and no matter what filter we have tried, I can still taste it. I have heard great things about the filtration system of the Berkey and it would also be great to be able to take on camping trips and not have to worry about safe drinking water.
It would be great to know my family and I could have PURE water – no chlorine, fluoride, and a plethora of other things none of us need to ingest!
We are moving further out to the country so you can imagine what a great back-up this would be for our family! A must on our prepping list!

Water is water and I have drank water from some real scary places as the thirst was out weighing caution. But you need water, and without it you simply die. Me? i ended up with Beaver fever on numerous occasions and on one particular time I had it real bad (craps) from simply drinking directly from a clear moving stream. But no good. On the canoe i had a little 2 hp honda and traveled to Hoonah. I stopped to fuel up next to the shore and had to bend down to pick up a paddle. that slight move created a very unnessecary evacuation of my bowels that was not at my wishing. So I had to get to shore, strip naked and have a bath. because of bad water. it took 5 days to get back to normal.
I really could use the filter as I see a direct use for it.
I want a whole home system eventually but they are so expensive. A Berkey would be the perfect tool to carry me through until I save the money…
We have super poor water quality. It is so bad we go through several faucets ayear and have to bring in water to drinking and cooking. This would be great to have in our home!
Like the ability to have cleaner water…and backup. We have a little sink filter but it doesn’t do all this one does!

We have bought a water filter pitcher and use it a lot but it doesn’t hold much water for the space it takes up in my refridgerator. I would love to try one of these filters and they are pretty enough to sit on the cupboard too.

We live in a rural area and on the city’s water which is Hard water and they put too much bleach in it. It’s unhealthy and nasty tasting.

I used a filter similar to the Berkey when I lived in Pakistan as a child. They may be a bit slow, but they do make for clean water!

I refill 5 gallon bottles with water at the store’s reverse osmosis machine for ‘safer to drink’ water. The bottles are not the best and I have to make sure we do not run out. What a hassle! I have dreamed for years of getting a filtration system for our home but so far cannot afford it. I have researched them over and over. The Berkey’s seem wonderful and winning one would be fantastic!
I would love a Berkey so much because the area I moved to recently has a sodium additive to there water supply which I happen to be semi-allergic to the ingredient in the water so I have to have bottled water all the time when I want to drink water.

Like so many other people, having a safe drinking water supply, even during a power outage is a concern. I live a pretty a rural lifestyle, so the power goes out as part of the normal cycle of weather (ice storms, tornadoes, etc.), if that happens, the well doesn’t work…until I get it hooked up to solar! So the Berkey is the peace of mind of having access to drinking water from the near-by creek, if the need arises.

This would be great to have in case of emergencies and to ensure proper drinking water for my family.
To save all that time I spend getting water out of my fridge filter! Just started ACV and some LF pickles last night and my husband had to spend a long time getting the filtered water. That was most time consuming part.
I would like one of these because even though we’re on a deep well, our water still gets icky sometimes. And having had giardia once before, I know how much pain filtered water can save.
We have a well system, and just had our water tested.. it was “unsafe for drinking” then we bleached it.. and now it is “safe” still scary though.
Oh how I would love to have this system. We had a system that recently gave out on us. It really didn’t work well to filter out the bad taste or smell of our water. It was an electric system so we were tied to the grid with it. Currently we have nothing filtering our water.
