The first time I laid eyes on one of these lamps I thought it was a little weird looking but might be pretty. I discovered it out of the box in a discount store so I had no idea what it actually was, just thought it could be a pretty lamp in my house! I love the glow from candles but most candles are too fragranced for me to handle for long periods of time so I figured this lamp would be a good replacement.
The next month as I looked through my coop's sale flyer I spotted my lamp! Wondering why it would be found in my coop I read the description and found out a little more.
It turned out that I had discovered the Himalayan Salt Lamps. The lamp is made out of a crystal salt that is mined from the underground salt mines in the base of the Himalayan Mountains. Since it's salt, it has many different mineral properties. (It contains 84 different minerals!) When the salt is heated up by turning on the light, the lamp emits negative ions. These negative ions then bind and neutralize pollutants in the air. (Both electronic and naturally occurring) Basically like a natural air purifier!
Because of all this, it's been said that salt lamps help improved allergies and asthma around your home. Salt Lamps are also supposed to help those with depression, migraines, seasonal effective disorder, arthritis, and more. Not to bad for a pretty lamp!
I now have 2 of these salt lamps in my home. I especially love them in the winter to create a warm relaxing glow in my house and giving off a little light without having to turn the ceiling lights on. (I have this weird aversion to lights on the ceiling!) These lamps would also make great unique gifts.
