This is salad time of year for us!! We enjoying all the fresh vegetables from the garden and love making a fresh salad each day. While I like to make my Homemade Ranch dressing, my hubby’s favorite is this recipe.

Homemade Dorthy Lynch Dressing

What You Need:

  • 1 can Tomato Soup
  • 3/4 cup sugar (I use turbinado)
  • 1 cup oil (I use Sunflower or you can use vegetable oil) I have tried with olive oil, but we did not care for the taste
  • 1/2 cup apple cider vinegar
  • 1 t. sea salt
  • 1/4 t. garlic powder
  • 1 t. celery seed
  • 1/2 t. black pepper

Place all of the ingredients in a blender or food processor and mix until all is combined and creamy.
This keeps in the refrigerator for several weeks.

Enjoy! Until next time, Julie

  1. Leija, I don’t have any planned at the moment but I will make sure to post when I have one in the works!

  2. We dont have Dorthy Lynch where I live and my husband drives a truck and he gets it for me on the road. But now I wont have to wait I can make it myself. THANK YOU!! YOU HAVE MADE MY DAY

  3. Does the oil separate when it sits, or should you add it slowly to the top lid hole of the blender to emulsify it together?

  4. Julie you ROCK!! This tastes JUST like Dorothy lynch, and I can make it for a fraction of the cost (AND know what is in there!). I have to admit I “tweeked” the recipe a tich. I just COULDN’T do a full cup of oil, so I did half a cup. I also cut the sugar in half. I was licking the blender, so my guess is I am not missing the extras in the taste areas. It was delicious! I really don’t like salads, but eat them when on a diet, so I am happy to report the calorie reductions didn’t take away a bit from the taste. Thank you so much for such an AWESOME recipe!!

  5. I don’t know Dorothy Lynch, but this dressing sounds amazing. I like to make my own dressings & it’s time for a new addition. Thank you for sharing.

  6. I still have the hand written recipe for this “Tomato Soup Dressing” that my aunt wrote 50 some years ago!!!! It’s a great dressing!

  7. I was intrigued as to what Dorothy Lynch dressing was! turns out this is the exact same recipe as my mother-in-law’s “French” dressing which my husband loves. Glad someone else enjoys it too – I’m going to start calling it “Dorothy Lynch” – sounds so much more exotic. haha.

    1. Haha, I didn’t really realize this was not very well known…maybe it’s a northern states thing? (Or maybe just a midwest states thing?)

      1. It’s a Nebraska thing :-). Dorothy lynch is the nebraskan woman who made up the recipe. My familie’s from Nebraska and we all grew up loving this Dressing. Still my favorite thing to drizzle on fresh tomato slices. When I was younger you could only get it locally, so after visiting family we’d fly back to California with smuggled dressing in our suitcases 🙂

        1. Yep. The only dressing we ever had growing up in SE Nebraska. We took it with us when we went on vacation. Go Dot Lynch!

  8. Would you think that using fresh tomato in lieu of canned tomato soup (it has HFCS) would still be workable?

  9. We love Dorothy Lynch salad dressing…decided to try this recipe since it is so expensive in the stores…I had all the ingredients on hand and made it for a fraction of the cost…it tastes wonderful and just like what I would buy in the store…so glad I found this recipe…will be using it from now on

  10. My favorite dressing is a white French! After falling in love with it at a local restaurant , I scoured the Internet for one like it! Here it is!

    1/4 cup grated onion
    1 clove of garlic, grated
    1 tbsp + 1 tsp sugar
1 tbsp + 1 tsp white wine vinegar
    1 tsp dry mustard
    1 cup mayo

Place all ingredients in small food processor and blend. Refridgerate a couple of hours to let flavors blend.

  11. I love this salad dressing post with the 5 great recipes to try. This one looks so good. I don’t want to take the time to make homemade tomato soup. Do you have a good canned brand that you can recommend that is minimally processed and preferably organic? Thanks for any help.

      1. Thanks so much. I have seen Pacifica at my local Whole Foods. I do like those tetra packs. I will look for the tomato soup tomorrow and can’t wait to try this dressing!!!

  12. Hello, I joined your site from Australia, am thoroughly enjoying your recipes – we do not have a lot of the ingredients that are in America but I am trying some different things that sound like your ingredients.
The Dorthy Lynch Dressing sounds yum, may I please ask how long you can keep this dressing in the fridge.
    Thanking you
    Wendy

  13. DO NOT use apple cider vinegar! If you want the authentic Dorothy Lynch dressing taste, use regular vinegar instead. I made this recipe as stated and it ended up being dumped down the drain because. We are from the Midwest and Dorothy Lynch is our favorite dressing. We put it on several dishes other than salads. Needless to say, we know what it’s supposed to taste like. I remade this recipe using distilled white vinegar…it was on point and has now been added to our recipe box.

  14. This is so close to the original Dorthy Lynch, you wouldn’t know the difference.
    +10 in my books.
    Thank you for the recipe.

  15. I am from the southeast and have never heard of Dorothy Lynch dressing. I looking forward to trying it! We have a tomato based dressing called “Comeback” that a version is served in all our local Greek restaurants. I will find a recipe and post it for you. Thank you for sharing this! Homemade dressings are always the best!
