Need to spice up taco night at your home? Make Fajitas instead! Here’s a simple homemade Fajita Seasoning recipe that you can make with other pantry staples.
Homemade Fajita Seasoning Mix
I’m pulling this recipe out of the archives! This recipe for Fajita Seasoning was one of the very first recipes that I posted here on the blog way back in 2009. While it’s a great little recipe if you are looking for a different blend than your standard Taco Seasoning, it needed a little updating, so I’ve had it hidden for a few years because I forgot to do the updating!
This is a great recipe that we use for a fajita seasoning mix. It’s really good because you can add as little or as much as you want. Unlike store-bought fajita mix, you can customize this recipe based on your taste and what you can eat (and have on hand!).
If you do not use chicken bouillon in your home, you can leave that ingredient out and add slightly less of the blend to each recipe. Also, you can use homemade chicken stock in its place (which is what we do), or it will work just fine if it’s left out entirely.
Remember, you can also dry your own powdered chicken broth to use in recipes like this OR you can use the Faux Bouillon recipe found in my book Little House Living.
Fajita Seasoning Mix Recipe
Make your own fajita seasoning so that you can enjoy this flavorful meal any night of the week!
Ingredients
- 3 Tablespoons cornstarch or another starch
- 2 Tablespoons chili powder
- 1 Tablespoons salt
- 1 Tablespoons sugar Optional
- 2 1/2 teaspoons chicken bouillon cube crushed, Optional (can use homemade)
- 1 1/2 teaspoons onion powder
- 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1/2 teaspoon cayenne pepper
- 1/4 teaspoon crushed red pepper flakes
- 1/2 teaspoon cumin
Instructions
-
Combine all ingredients. Pour into a glass or plastic container and store in a cool dry place.
Keep this recipe in your Recipe Binder and use it as needed.
When using this on your fajita meat or ingredients, you’ll want to use about 3 tablespoons. This recipe will make the equivalent of 3 fajita seasoning packets from the store. Three tablespoons will season roughly 1-2 pounds of meat and/or veggies, depending on how flavorful or spicy you want your dish to be.
If you want to make a big batch, you can double or triple this recipe to have plenty for future meals.
Store your spice mix in an airtight container so no moisture can get in. You can add a tablespoon cornstarch if you are having issues with caking.
If you are making a smaller amount of meat or fajita ingredients, you can just use a smaller amount of the mixture.
Variations for Homemade Fajitas
Of course, seasoning is only part of what makes fajitas yummy. Here are other ways to spice up your dish and add flavor!
- Add fresh lime juice for a splash of acid. We add this to the taco once we’ve put it together.
- Use the seasoning on shrimp to make seafood fajitas.
- Use leftover shredded chicken for chicken fajitas.
- Bell peppers are a staple in any fajita, use all the colors for a beautiful meal.
- Use leftover steak to make steak fajitas.
- Add some of the seasoning mix to sour cream for a topping.

Would you consider this to be the same as taco seasoning, or do you have one for taco seasoning? I just found your site, and love it, wish I had found it sooner.
It’s similar to Taco Seasoning but with a few minor tweaks. You could use taco seasoning for all your mexican style flavoring or this one…whichever flavor you prefer. Here’s my taco seasoning recipe: https://www.littlehouseliving.com/recipe-for-taco-seasoning.html
