Make Ahead Mashed Potatoes

Potatoes are another side dish vegetable that freezes well. Just wash and peel potatoes. Then cut into pieces and drop into hot water. Boil the water and potatoes until the potatoes are soft. Drain the water off and mash the potatoes. Add in butter and let it melt into the potatoes.

Once the potatoes cool off a bit, scoop them into freezer bags. Make sure you scoop enough into each bag for one meal. Label, and flatten the potatoes in the bag so they will freeze flat in the freezer.

  1. I was wondering how you reheat them after thawing? Do they taste as good as freshly made? If so, I will try this, I have never frozen mashed potatoes. Thanks

  2. thanks. love these kind of recipes. cant wait to try it myself. i do have a couple of questions, though. can u heat them in the bag? and about how much time do i put on my microwave to heat them up?

    1. You probably can heat them in the bag if you get a heavy duty freezer bag. I like to reuse the bags so I will take mine out and thaw it in the sink first then take it out of the bag and heat it. And the time you heat them up will depend on you rmicrowave and how much you put in one bag. 🙂

  3. I love this idea, was wondering how long will they keep in the freezer? And can you add milk along with the butter?

  4. I have made these and added sour cream &cream cheese along with the butter…they are so good you don’t even need gravy

  5. do they seem watery at all? i know that those dollor microwave meals with the mashed potato sides often seem watery and didnt know if these would have the same issue.

  6. Wow!! Thanks for re-posting. I’m always tossing out a few cause they’ve grown eyes. Now I’ll just cook them up as extra and freeze them, saving money.
