Sunburn Relief Home Remedies

I may have gotten a little bit too much sun this weekend and forgotten my sunscreen. Being that I have red undertones in my hair, I burned right away after being outside for only a few minutes. Yikes. I looked like a lobster and got a nice headache to top it off.

I have a few methods I like to use when I get a sunburn and they tend to work pretty well for me. Generally I can get the burn to go away by the next morning! Here’s a few of my favorite sunburn relief home remedies, make sure you share yours in the comments!

Good Coconut Oil

Since coconut oil is an excellent moisturizer, it works well for sunburns. What I like about it is that it gives you instant relief from the stinging of the sunburn and helps moisturize your skin at the same time. Make sure to use a good Extra Virgin Coconut Oil for the added benefits to your skin. (I love Azure Standard brand!) Since vitamin E is good for sunburn as well, you might consider making some of this Homemade Lotion to have on hand!

Aloe Spray

My favorite method is Aloe Vera Spray. Right now I just buy this Real Aloe brand, but I’m guessing you should be able to make it if you harvest your own aloe. The reason I like this so much is because you can just spray it on – no rubbing on those sore burned spots! It also has the nice instant cooling effect of aloe. Of course you can also just buy regular aloe vera, too.

Apple Cider Vinegar

Now if you don’t mind smelling like a pickle, you can use the apple cider vinegar method. Mix 1 T. apple cider vinegar with 1 c. of cool water. Use washcloths (Make your own!), soak with the mixture, and lay over the sunburn. You can also make this into a sunburn spray or bathe in the mixture if your sunburn is severe. 1. I love these ideas! I’ve never tried coconut or apple cider vinegar before, so I’ll definitely have to try those on my sunburn. I’ve used fresh aloe before and that works amazingly well.

  2. I normally use fresh aloe plant, but I’ve heard that apple cider vinegar works really well. I burn super easy though.

  3. Wow, I’ve never heard of acv for a sunburn. I’ve used both aloe and coconut oil though. I use coconut oil for everything! Of-course when it comes to sunburns, I like to condition my skin for the sun (sunning a bit each day) as opposed to using any sunscreen. (I know, I know, this takes time, something most people don’t have.) I did this while living right under the hole in the ozone layer down in Tasmania. While I burnt a little at first, eventually I was staying outside in the midday sun for a long time without getting burnt.

  5. Tea is very soothing on a sunburn too! Simply use brewed tea, cooled of course, and apply it with a cotton ball. I have very fair skin and have used this remedy for years!

  6. I use first ACV, then then coconut oil.
Blend up fresh nonifruit till it jells. Spread on painful burn. Blisters and red gone.

  7. Thanks for sharing your useful way of living with others. I’ve had success with apple cider vinegar on some skin conditions with my child. It is great to make use of God’s natural ingredients when able.

  8. I grew up with my mom using vinegar. I use that and aloe vera now. I will try coconut oil this year. I have sunscreen w/ coconut oil that I’m going to try this year too. Being a fair skinned red head I burn all the time. The top of my head burns whereever my part is.lol

  9. If you think you got too much sun, the best remedy is to drink an ample amount of water and apply either butter or olive oil to your skin regularly. Actually this method will turn what you though was a sunburn into a lovely tan overnight.

  10. Hi Merissa,
Thank you for sharing your home remedies. I particularly love your recipe for vanilla lip balm. I too am very fair and burn easily. Growing up in South Florida, I had ample sun exposure over the years. second to preventing sunburn with a high spf sunscreen, is applying aloe vera after the exposure. Typically applying oils or butter to the skin only increase the temperature of the burn and may actually hinder the healing process. In medicine, it is never advised to do this with burn patients, so why do it with a sunburn? The fastest way to heal the burn… apply aloe vera gel (refrigerated) with a few drops of English (true) lavender and a few drops of Roman Chamomile. These essential oils have outstanding healing properties and are soothing to rashes, eczema and burns….they are even gentle and safe enough to use on a child. A few drops of peppermint oil will give the aloe a cooling sensation when applied. They smell divine!

  11. I have never use coconut oil but I have use aloe and the vinegar. My grandmother was the youngest of six on a working farm in Texas. She got sunburned a lot. So her mom always used vinegar, however, she used both apple cider and white vinegar. I have tried both and both work. she would have us bath in a vinegar bath, 3 cups vinegar in lukewarm water. Soak and then rinse with a cool water shower. Then when we got out she would put aloe on. The great side effect of the vinegar bath was it made your hair shinny and took off all the dry dead skin. We always did this before bed and when we woke up we were almost completely brown and our skin and hair looked great.

  12. Nutritionist Dr. David Williams had a recipe years ago that has worked amazing for my 5 kids and I. It’s 9 parts almond oil and 1 part tea tree oil. It is seriously genius even with the worst burns. when applied within a couple hours of the burn, it heals all but the outermost layer of the epidermis so that only the very outer layer will peel if anything peels at all. This takes the sting out of a burn and really just heals it in short order. I cannot say enough about how genius this is. I’ll never go back to aloe gel again!

  13. Thanks for sharing your thoughts. I truly appreciate your efforts and I will bee waiting for your next post thanks
    once again.

  14. I use natural yoghurt (unflavoured, unsweetened etc) as my pale irish skin constantly burns even in Winter! Takes the burn out immediately and helps soothe skin in no time.

  15. Just found this site. Saw your sunburn relief, vinegar is ok, but. boil some water and throw in tea bags to make a strong tea. Take some old dish towels, hand towels etc and soak in tea, gently wring so not dripping and place over sunburned area. Great for shoulders and back. The linens used will be dyed brown so that is why old. You can wash and dry them and save for use again as needed.
