My favorite brownies can be made into a simple homemade Chocolate Brownie Mix when you follow the recipe below! If you’ve ever wanted to replace those store-bought brownies mixes with something a little more frugal or with something that has all pronounceable ingredients, this is the recipe for you. The best part is that you make it and store until you really need a delicious brownie treat. Because who really wants to start from the beginning of the recipe when you just REALLY need some chocolate?

Made From Scratch Homemade Chocolate Brownies Mix

I love these brownies! I originally came up with the recipe as a way to make brownies without eggs but they are so simple and delicious they quickly became a favorite in our household. Here is the homemade Chocolate Brownie mix version of the original recipe which you can find here: Made From Scratch Brownies, so that you can store these on your pantry shelf until you are ready to make them. Making homemade mixes is such a time and money saver because you won’t be tempted to go out and buy the boxed mix (thus spending extra money) and you will have a ready-to-make product, saving you frustration.

These brownies are delicious and I love having the homemade mix on hand to be able to make a quick dessert whenever I need it. This also makes a great gift when packaged in a mason jar. Convenience + made from scratch? I will take it!

Homemade Chocolate Brownie Mix

Homemade Chocolate Brownie Mix Ingredients:

  • 1 1/3 cups flour
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1/3 cups unsweetened cocoa
  • 1 /2 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt

Storing the Homemade Chocolate Brownie Mix

You can use any kind of jar that is around a quart size to store this recipe in. When I was originally making it, I found that I had 3 old Salsa jars in the cabinet so I used those to store the Chocolate Brownie Mix in. They didn’t quite fill up the jars but I love being able to use up any glass jars I have leftover in my home. They made a great (free!) storage container and you can refill them over and over. Here are some other Uses for Old Jars.

If you don’t have any old jars from other products to use, this recipe will store nicely in a quart size canning jar. It will be a little too much to store in a pint jar. I like to use these Plastic Jar lids for sealing the jars.

Homemade Chocolate Brownie Mix Instructions for the Jar

“Add 1/2 c. water, 1/2 c. oil, and 1/2 t. vanilla. Mix all together. Pour in a greased 8×8 pan and bake at 350F for 20 minutes.”

  1. Totally made these with the Hubs last night! they are fantastic! (Also we had some peanut butter chips left over from Christmas, and threw em in!) What a Nice, Yummie, EASY treat!

    Merissa you Rock!

      1. I don’t understand how these are meant to work out. Mine was so thick and dry, there wasn’t enough liquid to cover the dry ingredients?? I had to add about another cup of liquid just to stir it and they then turned out very bland….??

    1. Thanks for the recipe, Merissa, and this is such a brilliant idea – to have homemade ‘instant’ mixes!

I had the same problem, though, with my mixture coming out very thick. It’s definitely just 1/2 cup water & 1/2 of oil?

  2. Thank you, i just made these brownies for my friend they turned out
awsome love the gooeyness in them my friend is a allergic to a lot of
stuff and i have had a hard time figuring out what to do
    Thank you againJenny

  3. Can I use Self-Rising Flour for this recipe? I love gooey brownies but sometimes I don’t have eggs DX so I’m looking forward to trying this!

  4. This is a great recipe, a friend of mine who is allergic to eggs and loves to bake is getting married so I am doing up a basket of egg free mixes in jars for her bridal shower. I love this idea….

  5. I love this recipe. I did have to add a little more water to make it work. I used stevia blend to cut down on sugar and carbs. I also used gluten free flour. These were very good and so easy to make. Thanks for sharing your recipe.

  6. Merissa, I love all of your recipes and general helps. Cleaner eating, frugal ways of doing with what you have, but also helping us stretch not only our resources, but teaching that we can do for ourselves and our families.

All other posters, I have Merissa’s book, it’s worth every PENNY, and would recommend all that can, should purchase it….and no, I’m not being paid for this recommendation 🙂

  7. Thank you so much. I plan to add an entire section to my binders with “Mixes”, I will also add your homemade bread.
