Pigs in a Blanket

I discovered this idea in an old Taste of Home Cookbook. I decided it needed a little tweaking since there wasn’t enough cheese to my liking 🙂 Plus the original dough was too soupy. Hubby absolutely loved the soft bread shell of my version and I loved the combo of the hot dog, cheese, and bread. Enjoy!

Pigs in a Blanket

Ingredients

  • 1 1/2 teaspoons yeast
  • 1/4 cup sugar + 1/2 t. sugar
  • 1/3 cup warm milk
  • 1/4 cup warm water
  • 1 egg
  • 1 Tablespoon shortening
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 2 1/2 cups flour
  • 5 hot dogs
  • 8 slices cheese

Instructions

  1. Mix together the warm water, yeast, and 1/2 t. of sugar. Set aside in a separate bowl.
  2. Mix together all the other ingredients. Then add in the yeast last. Add enough flour to the mixture so the dough is nice and soft and workable.
  3. Knead the dough for about 4-5 minutes until if forms a smooth loaf.
  4. Set in a warm place and let rise for about an hour of until it doubles in size.
  5. After the dough has risen take it out of the bowl and form it into 5 balls. You may need to add a little more flour so they don't get sticky. Then roll out the balls into rectangles about 6"x 4" depending on how big your hot dogs are.
  6. Take an uncooked hot dog and wrap 1 1/2 slices of cheese around it.
  7. Place the wrapped hot dog on the flattened dough.
  8. Roll up the dough with the cheese wrapped hot dog inside. And seal the edges and ends the best you can.
  9. Place the sealed edge down on a greased cookie sheet. Place in a warm area and let rise for about another 10 -15 minutes. Then bake at 350F for about 15 minutes or until golden brown.
  10. Serve warm. Yum....these didn't last long!

Freezing Pigs in a Blanket

These freeze very well so they make a great freezer meal! In order to freeze them, make the entire recipe and bake them before freezing. Once the Pigs in a Blanket have cooled, place them in a gallon size freezer bag (at least one bag per recipe) and stick them in the freezer. When you are ready to enjoy, just thaw them in the fridge or stick them in the microwave to warm them up and they are ready to eat!

When I’ve frozen this recipe, I usually double or triple it to make a large batch to put away for later. One recipe will make 5 Pigs in a Blanket.

  1. God bless you girl, I was waffling this morning about what to make for supper (all I could think was soup), so I gave these a shot, and my hubs thought they were great! I made baked bean soup alongside, and I was a happy girl. If I can cook supper, someday I may even be able to blog again!

  2. So, I have(what I am sure is) a stupid question! But, at what stage & how do you freeze them? I’m assuming it’s before they’re cooked?!

  3. Pigs in a Blanket look yummy. Such a great idea, I bet it tastes so much better than store bought? Using your recipe, you could also make kolaches. Stuff with sausage, cheese and jalapenos. Thanks for the recipe, I must try it out in the near future.

  4. This looks great! My girls love hotdogs. I bet this would even be great to toss in the lunchbox for a change. I love cooking in bulk, so I may have to make up a batch of these very soon!

  6. I have made these quite a few times since your first time posting them and the hubby and kids love them. I had extra dough so I filled it with diced ham and velveeta and it was a very yummy “hot pocket”.
Thanks so much for your “real” food ideas and posts.

  7. Aww! I made pigs out in the cold because I didn’t know til I got home. I do have buns so I guess that would count as a blanket.

  8. I think these look so much better than my cresent roll Pigs in a Blanket.

I am not only going to pin them, but I am going to share on my facebook page! I know everyone will want to try this recipe!

  9. Love this idea!! I make pigs in blankets quite often but never thought of putting cheese in then. Going to do this 🙂

  10. I made this tonight and my dough did not rise at all. I made sure that my water was at the right temp for the yeast and I know my yeast is good, I’m paranoid when I knead bread because I’m worried I’ll overknead it; but even if I did would that make it not rise? I’m just getting into baking and I’m just not sure what went wrong.

Also in future tutorials would you mind taking more pictures? It really helps for those of us who are newbies on the baking front, to see what it should be looking like at all the different stages.

Thanks! I love your blog, I’ve read every post!

  11. How do you go about defrosting these? I’m thinking of using this recipe but adding ham and cheese like a previous poster and making “hot pockets” that would be good for busy mornings. Do you thaw them out and then reheat or can I stick it in the microwave directly from the freezer?

  12. Hi Merissa, I hope you and your sweet family had a happy holiday. I am thinking of making these pigs in a blanket for a fun treat during our holiday school vacation. One question…is it 1 T plus 1 tsp of shortening? Just want to make sure.

Also, could I sub in butter? Thanks.

    1. Yes, since we don’t use shortening anymore I’ve used butter in this recipe and it works great. And yes, one tablespoon and one teaspoon (or 4 teaspoons total).
