Tom’s of Maine: A Review and a Giveaway

So on our quest to start moving to more natural and organic health and beauty products one of the last things I'm changing over is toothpaste. Once upon a time we tried out a natural toothpaste and it was so disgusting tasting that I still can remember the flavor.

The really scary thing about conventional toothpaste though, the thing that has kept me looking for a good paste even after my nasty taste experience, is the ingredients. I pulled up the ingredients for Crest 3D Whitening Toothpaste. Let's take a look shall we?

I'll only pick out the things that worry me most..., Sodium Lauryl Sulfate, a very vague "flavor", dyes, and other scaries.

Now for Tom's of Maine Toothpaste.

I am a little concerned about the Sodium Lauryl Sulfate in the toothpaste but Tom's did have this article about where they get it from and more info. I'm also not a big fan of the fluoride, however I learned that Tom's makes a fluoride-free and SLS-free toothpaste!

The flavor of the Tom's of Maine toothpaste is not to strong. It seems to be just the right amount of mint and the texture was smooth just like conventional toothpaste, not gritty.

I would say that if you are just looking to start switching over to a more natural toothpaste, Tom's of Maine is a good "middle of the road" product.  As good as they are for you, some of us just aren't ready for tooth powders or clay toothpastes yet! I like that Tom's steers clear of the artificial dyes and flavorings, that's a big plus to those of us with dye allergies!

I found the Tom’s toothpaste in Walmart, the kind without flouride. It is a fairly good price there.

I’ve used Tom’s for a few years now and love it. Walgreen’s will occasionally have a deal where you can get it close to free.

I tried Tom’s toothpaste once (for a week or so) and I think I must have been allergic to something in it because it gave me a bunch of mouth ulcers… : /

I’m gonna’ try this one way or another. I have a recipe for homemade toothpaste but it makes me cringe just thinking about it.
