Recipe for Cornbread
We’d been wanting a simple recipe for cornbread when I created this recipe. It’s so nice to have something so uncomplicated! AND my husband loved it! You can substitute buttermilk for the whey if you don’t have any. I was just looking for a way to use up my whey from cheesemaking the other day!
This is such a great recipe. We’ve tried other cornbread recipes and none of them has compared to this one. It’s not crumbly and dry, it’s nice and moist and perfect for drizzling with lots of honey.

Basic Cornbread Recipe
What you need:
- 1 cup cornmeal
- 1 cup flour
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 4 teaspoon baking powder
- 1 egg
- 1 cup whey or buttermilk
- 1/4 cup butter
How to make easy cornbread:
Mix the dry ingredients and the wet ingredients together separately. Then still together but don’t over mix. Pour together in a greased 8″x8″ pan. Bake at 425F for 20-25 minutes or until it looks done.

Wow… I sure did miss the sugar. This was an unremarkable recipe.
Cornbread doesn’t contain sugar. Johnny cakes do.
Can you use masa harina instead of corn meal?
I haven’t tried it so I’m not sure if it would make a difference.
