My hubby is a car enthusiast (aka he has to buy a new-to-him car every year or so). So when the chance came up for us to review the new 2013 Kia Sportage in Denver he was thrilled.
As much as I would love to drive to town in a horse and buggy, that just isn’t a practicality in this day and age. And we live too far away from a town to be able to go without a car or to only have one car (although we’ve considered the later it just wouldn’t work for us right now). Hubby has a truck for pulling the RV and driving to work and I have a small SUV that I’m very attached to because of the 4 wheel drive (a necessity here!).
Since the 2013 Kia Sportage is very similar to my current car I was excited to check out the features on the new model and see how we liked them.
The first thing you notice when you get in the Kia Sportage is the Navigation System. With a huge screen, directions are easy to see and hear. And in the big city, directions are a must have! We did have a little trouble getting used to the navigation system (but I think this is due to being very loyal to Stephen…our gps in the truck 🙂 ), however it provided good directions and always took us where we needed to go.
One of our favorite features was the dual climate controls. My husband is always hot in the car and I’m always cold. With the dual controls I could crank my side of the car up to 90F and he could bring his down to 65F and we would both be comfortable! Plus the heated seats are amazing in the cold weather, and the driver’s seat features a special cooled seat option to keep the seat cool (which was really nice when it comes to black leather in the sun!). My husband loved that feature!
The 2013 Kia Sportage also features a backup camera that pops up in the navigation screen when the car is in reverse. It was a very nice feature to be able to use in some of those crowded Denver parking lots! And it was a good thing for me to have in the car since I have issues seeing at night. (Yes, I confess that I did run my personal car into our other car about a year ago because I just couldn’t see in the dark!)
I’ll be honest and tell you that I’ve never driven in Denver traffic before. I did live there for 3 months during a school semester but I always had someone else to drive me around. And I’ve been to Denver more times than I can count but I’ve never had the courage to drive in the city traffic! I just am a true country girl, I’m much more comfortable navigating my way around a herd of cattle that escaped into the road then any kind of city traffic. But I liked the Kia Sportage so much that I just had to try it. The 2013 Kia Sportage has some excellent control and the turbocharged engine really gets the vehicle up and going, and in traffic, that is a very nice feature! I actually drove all the way through Denver traffic several times during our trip and had no problems!
While we drove the Kia Sportage we averaged 24 mpg which is pretty good for an All Wheel Drive vehicle. Speaking of which…since it snowed while we were in Denver we had a good chance to try out that 4 Wheel Drive Lock feature on the All Wheel Drive. It worked very well and we stayed put on the roads without slipping and sliding around.
If I could change one thing on the 2013 Kia Sportage I would give it a little more room. It was perfect when I ventured off into town by myself or if I was just going somewhere with my husband but the larger car seat didn’t leave much room to get the baby out of the backseat. This car would be great if your kids are older and you wouldn’t have to worry about a carseat. I actually did find the backseat quite roomy when I sat back there with the baby.
Overall I really enjoyed driving the 2013 Kia Sportage. I liked the upgrades of the car and I especially liked how easy to drive it was!
Kia provided me with a 2013 Kia Sportage for my review however all thoughts and ideas on the car are my own.
