Around the Farmstead Week 2
We’ve continued with our roller coaster March weather this week. It was exceptionally nice last weekend and then cold again. The weatherman says that we are still in for more snow which is pretty typical for South Dakota in the spring but I’m very much hoping that soon the nicer days will come!
This Week We Are Reading…
I’ve been going through The 2000 Best Games and Activities and Nourishing Noodles. The games and activities book has some fun ideas in it for babies to younger elementary age children (we are looking for some things to do on these last weeks of winter!). I’ve been able to find some good looking recipes in the Nourishing Noodles book. Some have a few too many ingredients for my liking but I do like the ideas of some of the recipes.
This Week We Are Making…
The beginning of the week was really me just tossing things together. We’ve been trying to make sure we eat all of our leftover or anything in our fridge before it goes bad and I’ve been so focused on that I’ve forgotten to meal plan. I’m working on finding a few recipes to go on our plan for this coming week now. Sometimes it seems so hard when hardly any fresh food abounds and it’s just the same old frozen and canned products. I’m SO ready for summer!
Last weekend we had some super nice days so we grilled hamburgers and made our own version of “pork and beans” with bacon, maple syrup, pinto beans, and caramelized onions. It was so good! I’ve got another recipe for Pork and Beans here that you can preserve for quick meals.
This Week We Are…
We had a gorgeous weekend this past weekend and found that the ground was thawed enough to begin working through the garden. Yes, the picture that you see above is my mess of a garden, just beyond the mud (also known as our driveway) and buried under leaves and corn husks and whatever else blew into it over the winter. After last year’s buggy disaster I barely even want to look at it but if I just gave up, what kind of modern homesteader would I be? We have a totally different plan for the garden this year and I’m looking forward to sharing pics of our progress. Raised beds will be added in the next few weeks.
I’ve been hard at work planning my garden this year, but really it’s planning my yard. My goal this year is to not focus on the vegetable garden and focus on the perennial aspects of the garden/yard instead. Right now I’m finalizing my orders for grape vines, fruit trees, berry bushes, and more.
For “school” this week we did not get up to the library until yesterday so we didn’t have new books to start our next study (butterfly life cycles). We just did fun crafts and continued working through the Child 1st Alphabet Tales and Writing the Alphabet books. (Excellent for right brain learners!!)
What have you been reading, making, and doing this week?
