Around the Farmstead Week 3
We finally were blessed with a nice week here and so it’s time to get things ready for summer. The week started off with a little rain which is really starting to green up the grass, but every day after we’ve had some wonderfully mild weather. Perfect for working in the yard. We’ve been closely watching all of our trees and shrubs that we planted last year and waiting for the buds to appear. The above picture is my red Maple that I planted in the front yard last summer, it’s looking wonderful!
This Week We Are Reading…
I picked up The Children’s Blizzard last weekend at a cabin that we were staying at but I didn’t quite get to finish it before we left so I borrowed it from the library. It’s very interesting from a historical standpoint (takes place here in South Dakota) but a sobering read. It reminded me that no matter how much technology we have in our lives, we aren’t above the weather. It’s a good read.
For new cookbooks, I’ve been checking out 175 Best Superfood Blender Recipes and 300 Best Blender Recipes. I have a NutriNinja and love making all kinds of smoothies and sauces in it so I was looking for a bit of inspiration! As you can see by my bookmarks, I found several things to try soon.
This Week We Are Making…
I’ve been working on getting back to a better meal plan after a long deviation. I’m sure it will only last until summer comes. I’m notoriously poor at keeping a meal plan in the summer because I dislike cooking anything and just want to eat whatever is fresh!
As you can see from the pic above, I actually found a good amount of fresh produce this week…grapes, pears, salad, spinach, peas, squash, tomatoes, etc. Along with the frozen veggies that I’m still using from the garden last year we’ve been having some good stir-frys and some simple end-of-the-season soups.
This Week We Are…
We are still learning all about butterflies, colors, and life cycles for “school”. Our Caterpillars finally created their chrysalis’ this week (except for one that seems to just want to keep eating!) and the boys are SO excited to watch them transform into butterflies soon.
I got some of my berries ordered this week. I ended up with a few special grape vines, strawberries, and raspberry bushes from Stark Bros and I also order some mini citrus trees for the “conservatory” I hope to put in our sunroom this year. I also plan on planting blueberries (in a special bed because they need to have added acid), plum bushes, and more apple/pear/peach trees.
We went and picked up some old railroad ties and plan to work hard in the garden over the warm weekend building our raised beds. Hopefully next week I will have some progress pictures to show!
Since the week has been so nice we’ve mostly been outside in the afternoons and in the mornings I’ve been doing some serious spring cleaning. We are having a rummage sale next month and I’ve still got a long ways to go before I’m ready.
What have you been reading, making, and doing this week?
