Looking for the perfect hot roll to go on the side of soup or make a delicious sandwich bun? This Bread Machine Rolls recipe is so easy because you can toss the ingredients in your breach machine and have the lovely dough ready to use!

Bread Machine Rolls are the perfect dinner roll to go with your roast or to make a sandwich the next day. This recipe is so easy to make because it requires very little hands-on time.

Bread Machine Rolls

When I was about to get married, I had a bridal shower. I was given a recipe from each person who attended. This is one of the recipes and probably the one that I have found to be the most useful and have made the most often.

This is a great recipe if you just don’t have time to do all the kneading and rising of the bread yourself. During busy school days or on holidays like Thanksgiving or Christmas, it’s nice to use the bread machine to give yourself an extra hand!

These rolls are simple, light, fluffy, and perfect for many uses. The original recipe says it makes 12, but I’ve made them many times, and I prefer to make 9 slightly larger instead.

While this is a bread machine recipe, you can make these dinner rolls by hand as well. You will just need to knead the dough yourself before letting it rise, then knead again before the second rise.

I have a Zojirushi Mini Bread Machine that we like. It’s perfect for smaller loaves that are easier to eat up quickly.

Flour

Ingredients for Bread Machine Rolls

  • Water.
  • Butter. Salted or unsalted is just fine in this recipe. If you’d like these to be dairy-free, you can use shortening or a butter alternative instead.
  • Egg.
  • Sugar. This is plain cane sugar to help give the yeast something to eat so that your bread will rise nicely.
  • Powdered Milk.  You can use powdered coconut milk instead if you need the recipe to be dairy-free.
  • Salt. I use pink salt that I buy in bulk for all of my recipes, but you can use whatever salt you have.
  • Flour. This recipe uses basic all-purpose flour. I’ve not yet tried it with gluten-free flour.
  • Yeast. I buy all my yeast in bulk and store it in the freezer until I need it in a recipe. Active dry yeast or instant yeast will both be fine in this recipe.

Common Questions About Making Dinner Rolls

Can you use regular flour in a bread maker machine?

Yes, you can use regular or bread flour in the bread machine. Some flours that are milled differently will produce different results but should still make good bread or rolls.

Why aren’t my yeast rolls light and fluffy?

Did you have the water warm enough when you put the ingredients in the bread machine? Is your yeast still good? Did you let the rolls rise for long enough?

Is it better to make bread by hand or by machine?

It’s a personal preference. Both methods will turn out good bread. I make bread by hand when I want a particular shape. I make bread in the bread machine if I don’t want to turn on the oven or if I want to toss in a loaf during school without having to worry about it.

roast

What to Serve with Bread Machine Rolls

  • Roast. This is always a favorite to serve with rolls! You can even make the roast in your slow cooker, so you barely have any hands-on time for that too.
  • Soup. Vegetable Soup seems to go well with dinner rolls. Perfect for a cold day.
  • Meatballs. You can eat the meatballs on the rolls or on the side, but they are also great with your rolls!
  • Sandwich Meat. Whenever we have leftovers of these rolls, they work perfectly for making sandwiches the next day.
  • Jam or Jelly. Of course, you don’t have to serve these for supper with meat. Make them for breakfast and serve with a topping of butter and jam!
  • Hamburgers. While these will work for your burgers, I prefer this Ultimate Burger Bun recipe for firmer hamburger buns.

Why Make Homemade Dinner Rolls?

Bread Machine Dinner Rolls are great to make at home because they require so little hands-on time but produce an excellent result. Although they contain around the same number of ingredients as store-bought dinner rolls, they have whole food ingredients you know and can pronounce.

From my research, store-bought rolls usually contain preservatives and many different types of unhealthy oils. Most packages containing 10-12 rolls cost around $4 at the store. These rolls cost under $1 to make.

Instructions for Making Bread Machine Rolls Step By Step

Put ingredients in the order listed into the bread machine pan. Be sure that the water is warm but not too warm before you put it in. You can accomplish this by using warm tap water or warming the water up slightly in your microwave first.

Run the Dough cycle or select the dough setting on your machine. If you are unsure about which setting to choose for dough, check with your bread machine manufacturer.

After the cycle is finished, take out the dough and place it on a lightly floured surface. Form it into balls (9 or 12 balls, your preference!) Let them rise in a warm place covered with a clean cloth or a tea towel for 40 minutes.

Bake at 375F for 15-18 minutes or until the tops are golden brown. After you take them out of the oven brush melted butter on the tops and the sides. This will help to keep them nice and soft.

Store any extra rolls on the counter in a bread bag or another bag. Remember to use them within a few days or freeze what you aren’t going to use right away.

  1. Sweet Lady you have posted more yummy goodies again this week.

I think it is rather cool to go to your blog and see that you had made homemade rolls just like I do and I just got my batch out of the oven. Cool I thought,

My sister has requested pumpkin whoopie pies for her birthday so I just may surprise her.
She tasted mine and feel in love
    with them.
You have a wonderful day and weekend may God Bless You. Do you have any snow yet?
    Bonnie

  2. That's so neat that she requested them!
Nope no snow here yet but the extended forecast says its going to get really cold next week!

  3. BRRRRRRRRRRR! I am in south Carolina and we still have low 70's during the day. Low 40's at night. We get our coldest weather between Jan and March.

  4. I don't have a bread machine, do you know if this would work in a stand mixer with a dough hook? I have only ever made pizza dough before but I would love to learn to make everything else! Bread is pretty expensive! =)

  5. Bonnie: It's still pretty nice here during the day but that's going to change next week.

Valerie: You would just have to try it. Make sure you knead it enough.

  6. Marissa,

Do you think they can be made by hand? Do you use a bread machine or a mixer with a dough hook? I’m just curious but I don’t have either.

    1. For this recipe I use a bread machine, but for most recipes I use a mixer with a dough hook. Yes I’m sure they could be kneaded by hand, you may just have to knead it, let it rise, knead it again, and let it rise again.

  7. Yes you can. Just knead the dough for about 5 minutes and then let it rise for an hour in a warm place before you form it into balls. Then follow the rest of the recipe from there:)

  8. Thank you for the yummy recipe! I made it tonight, and it came out
perfect! This is one of our new favorite bread recipes! 🙂

  9. Can you put the yeast in with dry ingredients if making this ahead as a pre made mix? I thought I read something about salt activating yeast?

    1. Yes, I mix the dry ingredients together but I don’t add in the yeast and just put that in when I make up the mix and add in the wet ingredients.

  10. Hi Merissa,
Do you have a substitute for the dry milk powder? I am allergic to dairy and I have been trying to make rolls. I want to try your recipe! Any ideas?
