I decided to try and figure out this week how much we needed to spend on food each month. I consider myself to be able to do some excellent budget work, but this was one area that I know I needed to work on. Here’s what I did.
1. Take about 7 recipes(meat and no meat) that your family enjoys eating and break down each item in them and see how much it costs to make it. For example:
1lb Shredded Turkey (whole turkey .79 lb) .79
Bread(homemade in bread machine) .50
Shredded Cheese .99 for 8 ozs.
Now lets say that recipe serves 4. So our total if roughly 2.28 for 4 or .57 each.
2. Take the number of people in your household and times that by the cost per person per recipe. Example: .57 x 3 = 1.71
Do that for each recipe.
3. Take those totals (7 totals) and add them together and divide by 7.
4. Take that total and times it by 4.
Example 9.69 x 4=38.76
That total is approximately how you much you spend on suppers for a month. Do the same thing for breakfast and lunch and add them all together. This is how much you spend on your food for your family for a month. This estimate is a little lower than the real total however because you didn’t figure in side dishes or drinks.(Although you easily could) The total I came up with for me and my husband was only 51.84 per month!
I hope this helps you plan your budget a little better. Sometimes its just so hard to figure out how much you need for things but by doing this you should be able to see if you are spending a reasonable amount on food or if thats an area of your budget that could use a little trimming.
