Salsa is a versatile condiment that can go on chips, burritos, eggs, or even mixed in with ranch for a healthier salad dressing. Salsa is naturally low in calories and speeds up the body’s metabolism, making it a fantastic addition to your diet. Commercial salsas can be loaded with sodium and contain preservatives, so making your own  easy homemade salsa recipe is a good idea. Plus, fresh always tastes better!

Easy Homemade Salsa Recipe

What You Need:

  • 3 large tomatoes
  • 1-2 jalapenos, stem removed
  • 1 clove of garlic
  • 1/4 cup onion
  • 1 tsp salt

Instructions:

For a smooth salsa, add all ingredients to a food processor and blend until smooth. For a pico de gallo, chop ingredients into smaller chunks and mix together in a bowl. Keep refrigerated until ready to use.

Variations:

  • Add 1/8 cup fresh cilantro
  • Add 1/4 tsp ground cumin for a nutty flavor
  • Add the juice from half a lime for a citrus taste
  • For a richer salsa, toss all vegetables with olive oil and broil in the oven for 5-10 minutes, until slightly charred. Remove skin from tomatoes and blend in food processor.

Selecting the right jalapenos can make a huge impact on your salsa. Jalapenos have between 2,500 – 10,000 Scoville heat units. That is a pretty broad range, which means some jalapenos are very tolerable, while others are scorching hot. That can make it challenging when trying to figure out how many jalapenos to add to your salsa, or other dishes.

Some say that jalapenos with a pointier end will have more heat. Others suggest peppers that look like they have been under duress (ones with scars or lines that run down the pepper) will be hotter. The membranes of jalapenos contain the most concentrated amounts of capsaicin, which adds the most heat. If you are wanting a mild salsa, remove the membranes and seeds before adding the jalapenos. If you want a spicier salsa, leave them in. Whenever handling raw jalapenos, it is a good idea to wear gloves and avoid touching your eyes.

  1. A nice and simple recipe. Can you can this salsa? I would think a pressure canner since there are peppers in it … have you canned it?

      1. Hi Mike, thanks for checking out this post!

This recipe may not be ideal for canning, due to its small quantities. It would also need lemon juice or vinegar to increase the acidity for canning. I haven’t tried canning a version of this recipe yet, but I will once my tomato plants start producing more tomatoes. I will report back and let you know how it goes!

The recipe Merissa posted looks fantastic though, so if you’re wanting to can salsa, I would definitely check out her post 🙂

  2. I hate cilantro – it tastes and smells like really foul dirty socks to me. So whenever a recipe calls for it, I substitute Lovage. The bonus us that lovage is a hardy perennial for the prairies.

  3. I love homemade salsa. Nothing beats the freshness! Thanks so much for linking up to Freedom Fridays! Have a great weekend! 🙂
