The days don’t seem to be going any slower around here and I’m pretty sure we skipped right past all of the days this week straight into Friday. I just am not sure where the days go anymore!
This week I’ve been thinking about getting ready for canning season. I’ve located my jars, canner, and found the lids I’ve been slowly stockpiling all winter and I’ve gotten everything cleaned up. I’m making a large purchase this year to hopefully help streamline my canning and keep my kitchen from heating up as much so I’ve been saving up extra money for that. We plan on having a garage sale next week so then I will have the rest of the money needed, plus we will get rid of more of this clutter!
One thing that I think is crazy is that we currently own less than half of what we owned a year ago today. And I STILL feel like it’s too much stuff! Once you start downsizing it’s very hard to stop and I can’t wait until we’ve taught ourselves to live on as little as possible. I really can’t stand the clutter and all the “extras”.
I took this past week and cleaned out my clothes and the boys’ clothes. We now only have a certain amount of shirts, jeans, pants, ect. When I really started looking through their things (and mine) I realized we really only wear a few things over and over and there was no need to try and stuff the drawers with all these other outfits if we weren’t going to wear them. Drawer and closet/wardrobe space is a valuable resource around our farmhouse and can’t be wasted! I’m very happy with what I was able to clean out and get rid of and now we have much more space for the things we really need.
We had our first harvest from the garden this week! It was only lettuce so nothing too exciting, but I was happy to have something fresh to enjoy from the backyard. I think the tomatoes will be soon to follow and I’ve noticed blossoms now on the peppers and peas. The lettuce variety is Butter King. I haven’t grown it previous to this year but it’s lovely 🙂 It will go on my list of seeds to buy for next year!
Now I have a question for all your veteran broccoli growers out there….This is one of my broccoli plants. It looks healthy and has been growing well (besides the fact that I should have finish weeding before I took the pic, lol). They are very large but still are not producing any broccoli. These were planted in the ground from starts so they’ve already had a good 2 months of growing time but so far nothing. I’ve never grown broccoli before so what do you think they need? (Oh and the boards around it are cedar shingles. They are keeping the bunnies away!)
This beautiful quilt was an incredibly thoughtful gift we received this week from a Little House Living reader, Sue. It has quite the story behind it. Quilters will recognize it as an album block quilt. The blocks are from 1936 and there are a few names of hubby’s ancestors written on the blocks! The quilt was finished and sent to us by Sue and we love it! We can all even fit under it when we sit on the couch together 🙂 When it’s not in use we currently have it sitting on my antique steamer chest in our living room.
