I’ve been back and forth over the last couple months about posting my food budget here. After looking over everything I learned that we. are. weird. But one of the biggest complaints I hear about buying real and healthy food is that “It’s just too expensive.” So I hope somehow by seeing my food budget you might just think differently.
I budget $200 per month for food (for 2 of us + some for baby who is not eating solids yet). I am allowed to add an extra $25 if we have it from my Irregular Income Budget Sheet. This month we got $225 for our food budget. (And for us a “month” is from the second pay check to the second paycheck if that makes any sense. The first check goes entirely to bills.) Note that “food budget” means health, beauty, food, and household items. I had way more trips to the grocery store this month than normal thanks to many many visits to town for various appointments. Here’s what I bought this month:
7/28: Safeway – $8
7/29: Walgreens – $14
4 packs diapers (used coupons!), batteries, shampoo
7/31: Safeway – $11
Bananas, Apples, Strawberries (to dry for snacks)
8/3: Farmer’s Market – $25
20 pounds tomatoes
8/9: Safeway – $14
Toothbrushes, Bananas, Cereal & Snacks for hubby
8/10: Sam’s Club – $34
5lb Cheese, 4lb butter, 3lb Sour Cream, Yogurt
8/19: Safeway – $8
Bananas! (I dried and froze these!)
8/20: Azure Standard – $51
14lb White Rice Flour, Guar Gum, Rice Pasta, Frozen Broccoli, Cottage Cheese, Potato Starch. (aka Gluten free baking needs!)
8/23: Hutterite Order – $24
4 whole chickens
Total Spent for the month:
We also spent:
8/16: Fruit Order – $160
50lbs Potatoes, 75lbs Tomatoes, 50lb Peaches, 12 Peppers
I used the remaining money from our food budget as well as money from another part of our budget to be able to buy this extra bulk to put up for the winter and to pay for meat.
And yes, I realize I bought a lot of bananas. I got a great price and I sliced, dehydrated, and froze these for snacks for this month and later on.
You might notice that I don’t have any meat (besides the chicken) on this month’s budget. We only buy meat a few times a month. I buy chickens when the Hutterites come to town every few months and we buy beef from my parents once or twice a year. We pay for that from savings or we barter for it.
Make sure to check out our meal plans for the last month to see what we actually ate!
I know that our food budget and possibly our eating habits are not conventional! Please feel free to ask me questions in the comments or by email.
