Why Home is My Favorite Place on Earth
I will admit, I have a bit of a traveler’s bug in my soul. I’m not sure where it comes from, I’ve researched my family history and it seems as though most of my ancestors were pretty settled in their villages and rarely moved around. But me… I just love to discover new, beautiful places around the country. To see the varying nature and the lovely landscapes that can be so vastly different from that which I’m used to.
It’s been a few years now since we lived in a camper (about 2 1/2 I think?) and I don’t know if we are at the place that we will stay forever. But I do know that when we leave the state for something, I always miss it and am ready to be back “home”. Even if home just means to be back on the prairie.
I was born and raised in South Dakota. I’ve lived out of the state for a grand total of 6 months, I always come running back! I’ve never really been able to put my finger on the appeal but there is something about my home state that runs deep within my bones. Maybe it’s the friendly people, maybe the beautiful sunsets, perhaps it’s the wide open skies (I will admit I get a little claustrophobic around trees!). I love the big red barns, the farm critters, the big fields, and the even bigger cottonwood trees that make up our surroundings in our current area.
We’ve lived in 7 different homes (2 campers!) over the last 9 years of marriage. That is a lot of moving and a lot of places to call home. But through all of that I’ve realized that anywhere my hubby and boys are, that’s home. No matter if it’s an apartment, a camper, or an old falling-apart house, it can still be home because that’s what we make it. Not because it’s a specific location.
Making cookies together for Christmas.
Building a fort and then reading books inside with flashlights.
Taking a nature walk down the road.
Family dinners together every night.
Bedtime baby snuggles and kisses.
Playing games or puzzles together.
Those things are home to me. They are the precious little things that happen no matter where we live that make the house a home. I will always have that wanderer’s spirit but it’s because of that traveling bug that I know the true meaning of home.
I would love to know, what is home to you? Share with us in the comments section!
