Homemade Bread Machine Bagels
Bagels can make a great quick lunch when used as a sandwich bread or a wonderful simple breakfast when topped with a cream cheese spread or even a nut butter. There are so many ways to serve these wonderful little treats!
One of the things that I really like about bagels is that they can be made ahead of time and frozen until you want to enjoy them. They do take a little bit of time to make so the fact that they are easily freezable makes them a wonderful thing to make on your baking day.
Homemade Bread Machine Bagels
What you need:
- 1 1/8 cup warm water
- 1 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 2 Tablespoon sugar
- 3 cup flour
- 2 1/4 teaspoon yeast
Add ingredients in order listed to the bread machine. Run on a “Dough” cycle. (I have a Breadman Bread Machine) After the cycle finished take out the dough and let it rest for a minute.
Form the dough into 9 balls. Flatten out slightly and put your finger through the middles to make the center holes.
Let the bagels rise for 10 minutes in a warm place with a clean towel over the top.
Drop the bagels in boiling water with a little bit of sugar added. Boil for 1 minute on each side of the bagels. After you remove the bagel from the water lay on a greased, cornmeal sprinkled cookie sheet. Brush the tops with egg whites.
Bake at 375F for 20 -25 or until browned on the tops. They won’t necessarily be the prettiest bagels to look at but they sure are light and fluffy!
Once you have this homemade bagels recipe down you have to try my Chocolate Chip Bagels recipe. So yummy!
How do you enjoy your bagels?
Take your balled dough and roll into strips. connect the strips together with water to dampen ends so they hold together, then do as you normaly would in your recipe they will be more attractive. If you want them to look different. To me they look just fine the way you made them. Have a good day,
Thanks so much for the recipes.

Can this be done without the bread machine, just let rise?
It looks really good.
It probably can, just make sure you knead it for long enough before you let it rise.
I just tried this recipe although I have to admit I had to change it up a little. I was almost done adding all the ingredients and I realized I didn’t have 3 cups of flour . I only had almost 2 cups. My husband and I share a car right now due to hard times and I didn’t want to walk to the store and spend money on groceries not because I’m lazy but because we need groceries so I am waiting for my husband to get home from work so I have the car. I was looking all around my kitchen and came across pancake mix. It was the only other option I had so I used a little over a cup of it. They still came out and they are still very good so success after all.
Great improvising!
these turned out amazing!!!! I will never buy a store bought bagel again!!!
Thanks
I made these last night, they were so easy! My kids loved them and have already requested that I make more! Thanks for a great recipe!
So glad everyone enjoyed them!
Do I use AP flour or bread flour?
You could use either in this recipe.
If I wanted to make these flavored, say cinnamon raisin, would I just add the ingredients in with everything else in the bread machine??
Yes you would.
Oh I am making these today for my husband. He is a bagel man and his favorties are the salted bagels with cream cheese of course. However wanted to let know I tried your saltine receipe and was a great hit especially for the shrimp cocktail. I really enjoy your receipes and is a pleasure to find them easy. Thanks again.
Those sound amazing! I always have so many problems with my bread maker up here in the mountains, though. Do you think there would be any changes for high elevation? Thanks for the idea. 🙂
How neat!! I bet these are amazing! 🙂
I would love for you to share this with my Facebook Group for recipes, crafts, tips, and tricks.

Hi there, could I substitute gluten free flour? Thank you
I haven’t tried this recipe with gf flour yet but it’s always worth a try. Let us know how it works for you!
Could you explain at which stage you freeze, and how you prepare them once they are defrosted? Thanks – looks delicious!
Oh wait – I guess you just feeeze them totally prepared and toast like commercially prepared bagels, silly me! ?
Great idea! Thanks for linkin’ up with What’s Cookin’ Wednesday!
Would this work with other floors to make a gluten free product ?
I have not tried it with gluten free flours yet so I’m not sure.
Oh yum. I expected the rising time to be way longer than just 10 minutes!! Looks great! 🙂
