I had a request on the survey that I posted to make more make-your-own junk food. I love this idea. I’m not the healthiest person in the world but it’s fun to have some goodies once in a while, the problem is I can’t eat store-bought goodies so I have to figure out how to make my own. So the first thing I made on this little challenge was homemade Milanos. Once you realize that these are just simple shortbread cookies, they aren’t so intimidating, and definitely not worth spending $3 a bag on!

Homemade Milano Cookies Recipe

What you need:

  • 1 stick butter
  • 1/3 c. brown sugar
  • 1 t. vanilla
  • 1 c. flour
  • 1/2 c. chocolate chips
  • 1 T butter

Mix together the butter, brown sugar, vanilla, and flour. It’s hard to mix it correctly with a spoon so have fun and use your hands!

Roll into 1 inch balls and flatten. Place on a cookie sheet. Bake at 325F for 15 minutes. These won’t be as thin as store boughten Milanos but if you make them too thin they won’t be able to hold the chocolate.

After the cookies have had a chance to cool. Melt the 1T of butter and the chocolate chips.

Dip the cookies into the chocolate and let them dry on waxed paper. I didn’t have any waxed paper so I just used my drying rack.

  2. Save the liners from boxes of cereal. BEST wax paper you will ever use. Just open it up on the seams.

  3. I made these yesterday. They are very good and so simple. I pressed the dough out and used a shot glass to cut out the cookies. I got 24 out of this recipe. I’m a Milano junkie and I’m thinking I will be making these and freezing them instead of buying a bag from the store!
