Making the Most With What We Have

Welcome to our brand new series here on Little House Living, “Making the Most With What We Have”! This series will showcase individuals and families all over the US (and even outside the US!) that are making the most of what they have. We know that you can be a modern homesteader without 160 acres of land and a mule so this series will share the stories of these families so we can get a peek into their lives and learn from each other.

Today we are learning about Jessie’s Story…

Where Do You Live?

We live in Southwest Montana, in the middle of town, on a tiny parcel of land across the street from the train tracks.

What Are Your Dreams and Goals for Your Homesteading Journey?

We want to move to a place where we have to room to grow the food we need for our family of 5 (3 little boys can eat A LOT). We want the space for our boys to run and our hearts to be free! Eventually we would like to have sheep and market the fiber to hand spinners. We have lots of ideas! Probably too many to list here!

How Are You Making the Most With What You Have?

I haven’t bought eggs since the girls have started laying! My husband is a runner so he often only has the white of the eggs, we will scramble up the yokes for the boys’ breakfasts or supplement cheap dog food for our dog with the yokes. We’ve started building meals around our pantry, rather than planning meals and if we happen to have something canned up, we will use it. We buy in bulk when we can and have a chest freezer where we can freeze extra bread and other items we get a good deal on.

What Are Some Things You Have Learned So Far?

We’ve learned that we don’t have to wait for the ‘ranch’ or the bigger space…why not start now? I didn’t want to get chickens because we live so close (literally our houses are 10 feet apart) to our neighbors, I worried what they would think of us. We now have 4 chickens, getting enough eggs to do breakfast each morning. The comments we hear from our neighbors about how much they hate our chickens is just outweighed by the joy (and food!) they bring to our family. I have a tiny garden, but I’m constantly converting unused space into new planting areas. I’ve dug up part of our gravel parking space in the alley and grew pumpkins and beets this year! We also put in a compost pile in the back corner of the yard. While we were sifting the compost my husband reminded me that we are living the simple life we always wanted to, just not in the place we always thought it would be.

  1. This is so cool! I love this new feature. It will help remind me to be grateful with what I have until I’m able to move somewhere else. I’m sure I’ll learn a few new things I can implement in my current apartment as well. 🙂
