Punched Tin Candle Holders

These little candle holders are so cute and pretty easy to create. Plus there is a variety of things you can do with them if you think creativly. They can be completely personalized and if you use scraps or don’t include the top wire they are completely free!

What you need:

  • Thin Metal Wire
  • Empty Tin Can(filled with water and frozen)
  • Glove
  • Hammer
  • Nails
  • Wire Cutter or Scissors

Here’s a picture of all that you need. Plus my frozen water filled tin can(you don’t have to fill it all the way I learned!)

If the tin is too cold for you you might have to wear gloves to hold onto it while you punch the tin. Use the nails and the hammer to punch a design into the tin.

You can’t see it too well but this is my whole punched design.

Punch 2 large holes, one on each side of the can, near the top.

Once you are done punching in your design, run the can under warm water to pop out the ice inside.

Use the thin wire to form a holder on the top of the can. Run it through the larger holes that you made near the top. You could also string a few beads on the wire for something different.

Stick a tealight inside:)

Sorry for the blurry picture, but tada! Of course I made a little house for my design! It’s so cute all lit up.
Price list:
  • Tin Can: Nothing(unless you count the cost of whatever you originally paid for the food!)
  • Wire: Pennies(this is optional, use what you have!)
Total cost: Free!

  2. I was just planning on figuring out how to do this after seeing some in a store for $12.99!! I said to myself I BET I can do these myself….and here ya go! Thanks for the instructions!!! I’m also going to be painting the tins bright colors, and hand them in various lengths on my lanai.

  3. how fun, easy and darned close to FREE! Seems like a safe way to contain candles too, I bet these would be fun outdoors at a summer cookout hanging from branches and on tables 🙂

  4. Hi Merissa,
Beautiful sight, filled with easy to do, economical and wonderful time saving ideas, thanks so much for all you do! I’m chasing 50 years of age and am learning from you. I am wondering if you have tried painting the outside of the tin can? If a person has heat resistant enamel paint already on hand, it might work. Thank you again for all the wonderful ideas and insights you bring to the table!
