Renovating the Farmhouse Landing: After Pictures

Make sure to check out the Farmhouse Landing: Before Pictures first!

After we decided that we wanted to purchase the farmhouse, I knew that I would not want to have the baby’s room in the 2nd bedroom downstairs. I’m sure the mamas out there can relate with this! I wanted my baby close by in case he would need something at night and I’m just not ready to be sleeping on different floors.

We decided that the landing was a good option for us to create a nursery/playroom space for the little one. A place to sleep, a place to read, a place to store clothing, and a place for some toys. (Although the majority of normal playthings I hope to be able to put in the 2nd bedroom downstairs since the main floor is where we will spend most of the day.)

My goal with the design of the room was to make it feel light and airy and open. It is a small space but I was determined to make the most of it!

The east wall is now the sleeping area. We have the big boy bed (which still hasn’t been used, but we will get there!) right next to mama and dada’s door. I could not find a cute affordable blanket for his bed so I just made one instead. Right now we have a little “cube shelf” with some toys and crafts up here but this will likely be a space for homeschool supplies when we start preschool later this year.

Renovating the Farmhouse Landing

Since the house had no closets of course (built before the day and age of closets!), we decide to put a little wardrobe in here. (It’s from Ikea) The baby doesn’t have many clothes that need to be hung up but he does have a few nicer shirts for church that we keep in here. It also has some nice shelves for shoes and other extras.

We also picked up a dresser for his room for all the rest of his clothing. It’s a bit large for the amount of clothing we have for him but it works nicely for cloth diapers and trainers storage!

Here’s a close up of the window curtain. I wanted to make something cute so I found this fabric (search “tractor” and it will come up), I love it!

And my favorite part of this room! Remember those ugly green spindles and the weird angles in this side of the room? Well we removed the awkward foot of floor space over the staircase and put in all new spindles. I was totally sure what to do with this side of the room since all the nursery items we had fit in the other side and I decided the perfect thing would be to make a reading nook! Farmer Boy loves LOVES books and I thought a reading corner would be a perfect space for us to read books together.

Farmhouse Landing

Eventually I will probably turn part of this space into a “school” area with a little table but this is just perfect for us for now. To make this space I simply found a futon mattress (which I still need to put in here) and I made some huge soft pillows. We are making some simple wooden shelves that will be perfect to hold picture books.

Oh and the pictures on the wall are from an old book/magazine that I found at an antique store. It was too cute to pass up!

Farmhouse Landing

This is a nice little space that is perfect for a nursery for now and will be easy to change up when it’s time. We also added a ceiling fan in here (there was no light fixture previously) to help move around the air a little better in the summer.

  1. I love how it turned out! I really enjoy reading everything that you write and am looking forward to renovation pictures of the rest of your house 🙂

  2. I love the space! What a wonderful job! We are just about to start a new home re model ourselves and I love getting ideas from your before and after pictures. Thank you for the inspiration!

  3. It looks fabulous! You could lay down a nice comfy quilt with the pillows as you hang out up there! What a great use of space for that big landing!! Bravo!!

  4. I love what you’ve done! It’s very nice. My favorite are the antique farm prints…those are so sweet!

    1. Us too! It really was one of the only parts of the house that was salvageable but we are very glad it was! This room actually had the worst floor, it’s pretty scratched up, but still very functional.

  5. Very nicely done. What a pretty space you have made it and I love, love ,love the reading nook. Don’t worry about the big dresser. You will need it as he gets older. It’s amazing how much their clothes grow with them. I have my 8 yo sons clothing just bursting from his small dresser at the moment. LOL He needs one the size of yours.

  6. Awww…so sweet! What a lucky little guy to have his mom and dad put so much of themselves and their love for him in his special space! Isn’t it wonderful to see your own creations grace the haven of your new/old home? If your little old house could speak, I’m sure it would be telling you “Many thanks for a bright, new beginning!”

Wishing you many blessings in this home–I can hardly wait to see the rest of the renovations.

  7. The room looks nice!! You probably have already done this but for some reason I’m feeling led to tell you to make sure that you have all that furniture secured to the wall, so it can’t fall over. God Bless!!

  8. WONDERFUL! Sure you already thought of this but…anchore that wardrobe to the wall! A friend of mine had her 5 year old daughter pull an Ikea wardrobe on top of her just pulling out a dress! Pretty scary.

  9. You’ve done a great job.

Completely off topic, I’m eating roast beef I made according to your recipe right now. It’s so good!

  10. Love it – it looks so clean, fresh and organized too! I love the curtain too – perfect for a “farmer boy”. Was going to suggest to buy another curtain and cut it intro strips to trim your blanket. But since you made it out of fabric why not buy a little piece, trim your baby’s blanket in strips of it around the edges to match and maybe make a little pillow sham to tie it all together (or just trip an existing pillow case). Voila – a custom blanket set to match the curtain. Since we have a landing area in the old farmhouse we rent, I too was thinking it would make an ideal nursery since its right next to the largest bedroom in the house (which would be mama & daddy’s).

  11. It is wonderful! What a difference. The curtain fabric is really nice and you deserve a rest for all the hard work that has been done on your place.

  12. Very cute and very functional! I’ve been enjoying your blog ever since I found it! I just bought a bag of pinto beans today! Thanks for sharing your knowledge and talents!

  13. If your washer/dryer are on the ground floor, you may want to consider keeping his clothes down there… It will save a LOT of packing clothes up the stairs. Just keep a change up there in case of nighttime accidents…. And hate to say this, but he will be OVER that banister before he is two most likely…. I know mine were 🙁 I had to make it much higher 🙁 And of a non climbable material – paneling cut about 6 ft high nailed to it. Hoping yours isn’t a climber – but one of mine sure was ! Cute space 🙂

    1. Ours is not a climber, he’s never even tried to get out of the crib! The railing is quite a bit taller than it appears, it’s well over 3 feet with some of the tallest spindles we could find 🙂 And I’ve decided to keep the dirty clothes hampers downstairs, I know what you mean…I did not want to haul them up and down the stairs!

  14. Cute! I love how you framed the magazine pictures! Where did you get the black gate at the top of the stairs?

  15. The makeover looks beautiful! I love the added detail of the vintage magazine farm art 🙂

  16. I love seeing your before and after pics! This is my favorite transformation thus far and I am looking forward to seeing the kitchen! So happy you all are enjoying the fruits of your labor!

  17. I love the before and after pics! You guys are working SO hard and doing an AWESOME job. Keep posting ….

  18. I really enjoy seeing all that your doing with the Blessings God has given your family and using the talents you all have, maybe you could use your home to reach others maybe teaching some of the things that you show on the internet as not everyone has computors or know how to use. God Bless Your Family and keep you in his care .Sandy

  19. You certainly have a fan club! I count myself among the fans. The house makeover is a progression of inspiring ideas, but I am looking forward to your garden plans now that planting season is upon us.

  20. Marissa, this is my favorite renovation to date. I absolutely love how you worked this seemingly “unusable” space into a perfect space for the wee one! And those retro style photos hanging, how cute are they?!?!

  21. y’all have done such an amazing job! and I totally feel ya on the different floors. mine is 8 almost 9yr old and I still don’t want to sleep on different floors. we’re reaaranging our home right now to fit us better.

  22. Merissa, I was wondering if the little bed for your little guy was from Ikea…I have a relative with a bed like that, and there might be extra sheets I could share with you, unless you’re uncomfortable receiving something from a reader.

    1. It’s actually not from Ikea, it’s just a regular toddler bed, I actually got it on Amazon. I would actually love some sheets for it, I’ve had so much trouble finding toddler bed sheets locally! Just email me ([email protected]) if you don’t mind sharing 🙂

  23. Great job! love the reading nook, I had one section in my sunroom (family room) for my children when they were growing up Makes a useful great space and I too love your wall art all of it is just great… Can’t wait for the next room makeover!! Happy Easter!!

  24. I love all the work you all put into the house! Everything is beautiful! I always love to see before and after photos. I love old houses and would love to someday have the money to buy and renovate one too. Reading and watching the transformation pics has put some spark and inspiration in me to want to do my house.

  25. Hi Merissa,

I have been following your blog for sometime now and I really love it!! I am from Africa so I may not really relate with some of the suggestions that are mainly exclusive to the US (like couponing, etc.) but I have learnt a lot and I continue to learn daily. Seeing the transformation you did in your house just amazes me since I just got married and we just bought a house. So all the decorating has to be done and I really want to give my 3 year old son a very nice and functional bedroom. Your renovation journey and your eye for finer things just melts me away. I mean there is no way that I would ever think of cutting pages from a book and frame them into a beautiful wall art like that. Keep up the good work!
