Seasoning Salt from Scratch

I gave up buying seasoning salt a few years ago. I know many brands add MSG to their seasoning salt  and I am always a bit leery of the word “natural flavor.” What does that even mean, and why doesn’t it sound natural?

To simplify things, I decided to make my own seasoning salt so that I have complete control over what goes into (and on) my food. So here you have it! My very own homemade seasoning salt recipe!

Seasoning Salt Recipe

Once you give this seasoning salt recipe a try, you’ll be amazed at how simple it is. You probably already have all of the ingredients on hand, so it’s just a matter of mixing them together and finding a container to store it in. It’s also great to be able to whip up a batch in a matter of just a minute or two, anytime I run out.

The best part? All of the ingredients used in this recipe are actually natural, so no “natural flavors” have been added. I guarantee you’ll never go back to buying seasoning salt from the store again!

Here’s the recipe.

Homemade Seasoning Salt Recipe

Be in control over what goes on your food by making your own seasoning salt!

Prep Time 5 minutes

Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup sea salt
  • 1 tablespoon sugar
  • 1 tablespoon garlic powder
  • 1 tablespoon paprika
  • 2 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon turmeric
  • 1/2 teaspoon pepper

Instructions

  1. Combine all ingredients and mix well. Pour into a clean jar or shaker and cover with a lid.

This mix should have a long shelf life, depending on the age of the spices you added. You can even make a big batch so you always have some ready to use on hand!

Store in a cool, dry place and enjoy whenever life calls for a little seasoning salt, (and um, when does it not?)

The spices I buy usually come in glass bottles, so I will keep the bottles when I use up the spices, and reuse them for my homemade spice blends or if I make a large batch, I like to store them in pint-size mason jars.

Alternatively, you can buy some good-quality shakers, or simply put the seasoned salt into small mason jars.

This seasoning salt recipe will go great on chicken, beef, or fish for a seasoned, flavorful taste. It also goes great on any roasted vegetable or savory side dish. Or try it on a burger patty or even sprinkled over some homemade fries! I use it in place of regular salt when my dishes are a bit on the bland side.

  1. I love all the home made recipes, I am trying to buy things I use more in bulk, like the garlic and onion powder. This way I know there is no extra fillers and I don’t have to buy an extra. I do not normally use Seasoning Salt but realized besides the turmeric that is exactly what I put in our hamburger meat.

  2. I love making my own seasonings but I’ve never made seasoning salt. Thanks for your good recipe.

  3. What a superb idea! I am definitely going to try it. It just asks for experiments – like salt with nutmeg and coriander, salt with dried oregano and basil, salt with dried dill and tarragon….. the possibilities are endless. Thanks so much!

  4. That’s a great point about how they sneak MSG into our food by calling it “natural flavoring”. Thanks for a recipe that sounds like a great substitute.

  5. Looks like a great recipe! Love the addition of turmeric! I usually just use salt, paprika, and onion in mine…

  6. I can’t wait to try this recipe! My husband has high cholesterol and needs to stick to less salt! He’s done well transitioning into sea salt but this would be another good step for him. We are going to be growing a lot more herbs and peppers in our garden this year so I can’t wait to get started making my own!

  7. What a great blend of spices. I have never thought of creating my now blends, but will have to give it a try!

  8. My understanding is that store-bought seasoned salt also contains some silicon to help it not clump and to pour easier. So that can be another perk to making one’s own. I’ve added this to my Pinterest collection, thank you very much! I look forward to making it.

Another good use for seasoned salt is for all the extra zucchini and summer squash (especially the ones as long as your forearm that appear overnight). We like to slice them in long strips, though circles is fine, too. We then brush on some oil and sprinkle seasoned salt on them. They go great on the grill that way.

  9. Too funny. I just made my own onion powder and dehydrated mushrooms for the first time this week! We love seasoning salt and will add you recipe to the to-do list.

  10. I make something similar, have not tried turmeric in it, but for a bit more spice some add cayenne pepper. I like mine kind of hot and put cayenne, chipotle, mesquite and cumin in an even spicier blend that is smoky. It is great on anything you are going to grill.

  11. Love this! I’m a big seasoning salt fan. Now I can make my own 🙂 Thanks again for sharing at Simple Supper Tuesday.

  12. Oh I need to pin this! I haven’t had seasoning salt in so long because we adapted a real food diet. I would love to have sea salt in the house again!

  13. Definitely going to have to make some of this, it is much healthier than buying it pre-made!

  14. I love seasoning salt and you’re so right “what are natural flavours?” I ask myself that every time I read it. I don’t want natural flavours I want the real thing! Thanks for sharing this concoction I can’t wait to use it.

  16. This looks great – and I love mixing the herbs/spices myself since I can control the amount of salt and other ingredients, plus I can make sure there is no msg or other problem ingredients. Thank you for posting this. I saw your post on Good Tips Tuesday. 🙂

  17. I’m definitely going to put this together. I have to say, I’ll leave out the sugar, but everything else is great. I love that it has turmeric in it. I’ve been trying to find more ways to incorporate this great spice into my cooking. Thanks for sharing.

  23. Yes, yes, I need this recipe! I recently bought seasoned salt and could only find one brand that didn’t have MSG or other ingredients I couldn’t pronounce. I’d rather just make my own. Thank you!

  24. Hi Andrea, Thanks for this recipe. I just ran out of my store bought seasoning salt. It occurred to me that I could make my own. So, I searched and found your recipe. The natural seasoning salt I buy at my health food store keeps increasing in price. Plus you are right! I have all the ingredients already and will make it tomorrow.

  26. I have started to make my own spice and seasoning blends after learning about sand in many commercial brands. This is a great combination that would add so much flavor to any dish. Thank you for stopping in and linking up with us this week on #LetsGetReal. I love your ideas and hope to see you again this weekend on LittleFamilyAdventure.com. 28. This looks great. I can’t find onion powder at our
local supermarket. Is it supposed to be with the other spices? I like your freezer recipes alot and i need the onion powder with them too. Have you any advice for my. Thanks

    1. Yes it should be with the other spices, it’s a pretty common spice. If you could find dried onion flakes you could grind them in a blender and make something similar too, although you might want to add a bit more if you go that route.

  29. Dear Merissa,

  30. We use Seasoning Salt on almost everything. I have everything on your ingredients list so I’m going to give it a try tonight 🙂 Thanks for sharing!

  31. I make quite a few of our own spice blends but I never thought to make my own seasoning salt. We use seasoning salt quite a bit, so once I use up our current container of it I will make it myself since I already have everything on hand.

  32. Just found your site while looking for some gluten free recipes (thank you for all your sharing!) as ai have just been diagnosed with celiac’s disease. I have been looking at all your other recipes as well, including this season salt recipe.
I wonder if you can tell me, is the turmeric simply for color or is it needed for flavor? I ask as turmeric gives me a stomach ache every time I ingest it. I would normally just opt to substitute it with something else or omit it if I knew its overall purpose in the recipe.
I am a salt addict and know I need to cut down, so am looking for various recipes to help me reduce the amount I use. Thanks for your help!

    1. Turmeric is both color and flavor here but I’m sure you can leave it out and still have a good tasting seasoning, just slightly different from the original.
