Have you heard of Strider Bikes before? If not, today I’m going to introduce you to my boys’ favorite thing that they own. Not only are these bikes perfect for beginning riders, but they are also wonderful for special needs kids.
Strider 14x Bike Review
When our oldest son came to us at 2 days old, we knew he was going to have some challenges. When we started 3 different kinds of therapies at 8 months old, we knew that things were not going to be easy for him in life. I cried when we had to get him fitted for leg braces and I cried again on the day when he finally learned to walk.
Almost 6 years later he is still in physical therapy every single week, something that we will probably continue for a long time yet. You might not know his struggles by just a passing glance but this mama’s heart aches each time we go in for therapy and I have to watch him struggle to do basic things that you and I take for granted. But my sports-loving boy is determined to play baseball someday and I believe that he can do it.
We discovered Strider Bikes several years ago when we were looking into a bike option for him. Right now, he still can’t quite pedal a bike, but with a little extra effort, he is going to get there. However, he’s always loved bikes and moving quickly so we were thankful to come across the Strider Balance Bikes.
The Strider Bike company was started right here in my home state of South Dakota. The inventor, Ryan McFarland wanted to introduce his son to his love for bikes as soon as possible and he discovered that what we really need to learn to ride is a lightweight, easy to handle bike. Something that would teach a little one how to gain that balance they will need to maneuver a regular bike. From this idea, the Strider Bike was born and over 1.7 million bikes have been sold since the company was started in 2007.
Not only are the Strider Bikes a wonderful way to teach kids how to ride a bike, but they are an answer to prayer for us moms of special kids. Striders are available for all ages, not just for little ones, and they provide the perfect way for all children to enjoy riding a bike. This summer we participated in a Strider Bike program along with the Special Olympics and my son absolutely had the time of his life, he never felt like he was unable to do something that other kids could.
This fall, Strider has come out with a new product, the Strider 14x. If you are looking for a Strider Bike that makes the transition to a pedal bike, this is it! It can be used as a regular balance bike or you can put on the Easy Ride Pedal Kit to transition into a regular style bike.
The Strider 14x is designed to grow with your child and is perfect for children ages 3 to 7, depending on their height. We found it to be the perfect height for our almost 6 year old and it will be something he can use for several years yet (he is on the smaller side).
Strider Bikes are very well built and they are made to last, perfect if your family has multiple children and you need something that will stand the test of time! We have tried other “off-brand” balance bikes and they’ve rusted and fallen apart. Strider Bikes seem to be very sturdy and hold up, even to the abuse of some very rambunctious boys!
If you are looking for a great bike to give as a gift this holiday season or if you are just looking to get a first bike for your little one, or to finally get a bike for your special needs child, I have to highly recommend the Strider Bike company. After owning their bikes for several years, I still don’t have a single complaint!
Thanks to Strider Bikes, one Little House Living reader will win a Strider 12 Inch Balance Bike. This bike is great for children that are from 6 months to 5 years of age. To enter, just fill out the Rafflecopter form below. Good luck!
