Sugar and Honey Scrub
Check out this guest post from Amanda today! ~ Merissa
This year we are having a handmade Christmas. This idea came around for a few reasons.
- Love. I want every gift I give to be full of love. When I take the time to make something for someone, I really have to think about what this person is going to want and use, which results in a much more thoughtful gift.
- To support our economy. Shopping locally is great for the economy. What is more local than buying these goods locally and making them into something great to share?
- Finances. Let’s be honest: people spend way too much on Christmas presents. We like to keep it simple, focus on others, and save our money when we need it.

This sugar scrub is beautiful. It smells divine with the boost of energy you will need for those long, cold winter days.
The sugar in it exfoliates and encourages the growth of new skin cells, removes dead skin cells, and actually helps the skin look younger, while the honey helps hydrate the skin and seals the moisture into the skin instead of letting it escape from the pores.
The olive oil is high in vitamin E, which is a key nutrient for the skin. It will help your skin look and feel more supple and moisturize and nourish dry skin.
Sugar scrubs are better for more delicate skin versus salt scrubs so this is a good gift to make for someone that has sensitive skin. if you are making this for sensitive skin, you might want to leave out any essential oils or scents.
I used Peppermint Oil and Wild Orange Essential Oils in this scrub; both are invigorating. Peppermint encourages blood flow and gets the body moving. They are also both uplifting and help lighten the mood and bring joy to the dark winter days.

Ingredients in DIY Sugar Honey Scrub
- 2 cup Organic Cane Sugar
- 3 tablespoons Olive Oil
- 2 tablespoons Raw Honey (Where to Buy)
- 5-10 drops each (personal preference) Peppermint Essential Oil and Wild Orange Essential Oil
You can use regular sugar, it doesn’t have to be organic sugar if you can’t find it at your local grocery store. Olive oil could be substituted for another oil, like almond oil, if that’s what you have and prefer. You could use coconut oil as well, just keep in mind that it will solidify in cooler temps.

Step By Step Instructions for Making Honey Sugar Scrub Recipe
Combine all of the ingredients in a small mixing bowl and mix well. It will be a clumpy, grainy consistency. If it is runny, you can add a little more sugar by the tablespoon until you have the right consistency.
Add a few drops of essential oil if desired.
Place the mixture in a jar. I like the small jam sized mason jars. Decorate as you choose. If giving as a gift, you may want to tie a ribbon around the jar or add a cute little gift tag.
You may also want to include a tag so that your recipient knows how to use the scrub. They should use a small amount of the scrub and massage it into their skin in the shower or tub as an exfoliant. This is such a mild scrub it could also be given as a lip scrub or a sugar face scrub.
You could also include this honey scrub as part of a “spa day” gift basket or in a Time to Yourself Gift basket.

Think I’ll try this!
I made this before I even saw your site ! The other recipe called for just sugar and a bit of honey and it was a face scrub. I will try this when my batch runs out though!!!
I cant see the recipe just the picture then comments am I missing somthing?
I’m seeing the post in Google Chrome, maybe try refreshing or clearing your cookies and taking a look again? What browser are you using?
Can you use brown sugar with this? I have all the other ingredients, just no can sugar! Help!! It’s 3 days before Christmas and I need to make up Ladies gifts!
Yes you should be able to. 🙂
Just wondering how much one batch makes (per little mason jar).
This recipe would make 2 jelly jars full or 4-5 of the littler jars.
Good evening, I was just wondering about essential oils. I am looking to start using them for various uses such as cleaners, mosquito repellant, stress relief, antimicrobial, etc…was wondering if you have found a place that you love to get them from. I am looking for the product to be cost effective. I am not looking to spend a bunch of money. Thank you-Amanda Dietz
Right now I order them through my co-op, Azure Standard 🙂
Where is the best place to store this? How long does it last? Can it spoil?
It should be stored in any cool, dry place. Usually inside a cupboard is good. It will last a few months depending on it you add any additional ingredients to it or if you get any water in the jar.
How long do these last? Should i write an expiration date on the jars?
This will last for several months at least.
I have enjoyed your site and look forward to reading more. Question – exactly what is RAW honey? Can honey purchased at a grocery store work for the face scrub? Thank you
Raw honey is the unprocessed version of honey. It’s usually a little different color and more creamy than regular honey. You may be able to purchase it from a grocery store or directly from a beekeeper. I order mine from Tropical Traditions.
I would like to make a strawberry version. I have some strawberry oil. How many drops should I add?
Can you substitute vegetable oil for the olive oil?
can I use powdered honey to make the product last longer or will it not matter?
The honey portion of this recipe shouldn’t matter for the longevity of the product.
