I recently had the opportunity to try out Tattler Canning Lids. I do alot of canning in the fall and I was excited to try this to see if I liked them and could possibly save more money while canning!
The thing that sets the Tattler lids apart from other canning lids is that they are reusable! They are a plastic lid that comes with a rubber seal. Each time you use the lids you just flip over the rubber seal and you can reuse them for years and years. Plus another great feature is that the plastic used to make the lids is BPA free, so no worries when it comes to high acidic foods and preserving! In fact they recommend you use the Tattler lids for high acid foods.
Tattler is so sure that their product will last a lifetime that they even guarantee it. If you have a plastic lid that is no longer good you can just return it to the Tattler company and they will replace it. However they have yet to have a single person send a lid back.
The other thing that I like about the Tattler Reusable lids is that they are inexpensive! A good price for non-reusable lids at any store will cost you at least $1.50 – $2 per box. Tattler lids cost only $6.98 per box for regular mouth and $.78 per box for wide mouth and you can use them for a lifetime of canning! Sounds like a good money saving plan to me! I know I spend quite a bit in lids so this would create some significant savings for me.
I tried out the Tattler lids on my homemade applesauce and on homemade pickles. One of the lids did not seal on the applesauce but I’m not sure if that was due to human error or something else. The other lids all sealed tight. To use the lids you still use the metal ring around the top while you process and you remove the ring once the jar is cool to keep it from rusting.
Overall I really liked the lids and am planning on purchasing some to use for the end of this year and for next year. I will look forward to the day when I no longer will have to buy lids at the store and I can just use my reusable lids!
