Chocolate Toffee Bars
I came up with these little yummy treats the other day when I was making supper and just wanted a quick yummy dessert.
These thin little bars are just perfect: chocolate, toffee, and a sweet shortbread bottom. Plus, there are only 4 ingredients, and it only takes 15 minutes to bake. Does it get better than that?
This recipe ONLY uses basic pantry staples and no expensive ingredients like toffee bits, sweetened condensed milk, etc.
Ingredients in Chocolate Toffee Bars
- Butter. You use butter in both the crust and the toffee topping. You can use salted or unsalted.
- Flour. You just need plain all-purpose flour for this recipe. You can also use all-purpose gluten-free flour to make this recipe gluten-free.
- Brown sugar. This is also used both in the shortbread crust and in the toffee topping. You can use dark or light brown sugar, just use what you have on hand.
- Chocolate chips. I usually use milk chocolate or semi-sweet chocolate chips for this recipe.
Step By Step Instructions for Making Chocolate Toffee Bars
In a saucepan, melt together 1/3 cup of butter and 1/3 cup of brown sugar.
Let it boil together for about a minute after it has melted.
In a separate bowl, mix together the flour and remaining butter and brown sugar. It helps if you melt the butter.
Press the flour mixture into the pan. You don’t need to grease the pan.
Pour the toffee mixture on top. Bake in the oven at 325F for 15 minutes.
Remove the pan from the oven and add a handful of chocolate chips to the top over the hot crust. I add about 1/2 cup. You can add more or less depending on your tastes.
Give the chocolate chips a minute or 2 to melt, and then spread them over the bars. Enjoy!
Variations to the Chocolate Toffee Bars
- Drizzle white chocolate over the top of the regular chocolate for a more decorative look.
- Top with sprinkles.
- Top with chopped nuts.
- Drizzle with warmed up peanut butter or peanut butter pieces.

Hi Merissa! These look so yummy and easy to make! Thanks for sharing.
Can’t wait to try these. Thanks
Is this made in a 9 x 13 pan? If it is written in the directions, I didn’t see it. I was thinking of doubling it. I have to take something to our home group each week, but I need to leave some for my family.
Thanks,
Lynn
This is made in an 8×8 size pan. 🙂
The pan in the photos does not look square–so not 8 x 8 ? Could it be 7 x 11?
Yes, my pan was rectangle and an odd size (7X9, it was for a toaster oven). An 8×8 pan would be the closest standard size.
My aunt made something like this but she put Saltine crackers on the bottom and the toffee and chocolate was drizzled or melted on top. It was sooooo good. Its a great way to use up Saltine crackers before they go stale. The sweet/salty combo is great.
I posted that recipe around Christmastime:) Toffee Crunch Bars
Sounds good to me! 🙂
That looks delish!
Oh goodness! We might have to try these 😉
Hmm, I’m going to have to try this with coconut oil and coconut flour! (Can’t eat wheat or dairy.) Looks yummy! Thanks!
Hello Merissa 😉 I am wondering is the toffee going to be hard when its done baking or does it need to set for a while? I use my woodstove to cook and bake right now while its winter time. So i wi be cooking it on there. kinda need to know what its saposto look like when it done.
Thank you.
Sarah
It needs to cool just a bit just so you don’t burn your mouth (speaking from experience here! :p) but then it’s good to go!
