Hydrogen peroxide is one of those household products that so many of us have in our bathroom cupboards, but few of us actually know what to do with it. Well, that’s about to change! Here are 20 hydrogen peroxide uses you’ve probably never even thought of!

Hydrogen peroxide is a common household product with so many uses. Here are 20 hydrogen peroxide uses for home and body that you might never have heard of! #hydrgogenperoxide #hydrogenperoxideuses

What is Hydrogen Peroxide?

Hydrogen peroxide is a naturally occuring chemical compound consisting of two hydrogen molecules and two oxygen molecules. So it’s basically water with an extra oxygen molecule (H2O2). But does that mean it’s safe to use?

For the most part, hydrogen peroxide is very safe to use and is very versatile. However, it can be dangerous when swallowed so be sure not to ingest it. Be sure to use food grade hydrogen peroxide when using it on your body (food grade is 35% hydrogen peroxide diluted in water). Still, don’t ingest it as it can be dangerous. Otherwise, it’s safe to use in the following ways…

20 Hydrogen Peroxide Uses For Home and Body

1. Whiten Clothes. Add 1 cup of hydrogen peroxide per load of white clothes to get them extra bright. Get more tips on Frugal Laundry Methods here.

2. Detox Foot Bath. Add 1 cup of hydrogen peroxide to your warm water foot bath to draw out toxins. It will also help with any foot fungus issues.

3. Prevent Infections. Soak any wound in hydrogen peroxide several times each day. If the wound is smaller, apply the peroxide with cotton balls.

4. Keep Canker Sores Away. Are you prone to canker sores like I am? (Especially in the summer!) Use hydrogen peroxide as a mouthwash and watch them heal faster.

5. Make Toothpaste. Use hydrogen peroxide and baking soda to make a paste and use it as a toothpaste.

6. Keep Your Toothbrush Sanitized. Dip your toothbrush in a hydrogen peroxide solution after use to keep it clean and get rid of bacteria.

7. Lighten Hair. Want to lighten your hair without using harsh chemical dyes?  Put a little hydrogen peroxide in a spray bottle (half water half peroxide) and spritz on your hair when wet. Comb it through your hair and it should give you some nice highlights once dried!

8. Glass Cleaner. Mix one part hydrogen peroxide with three parts water and put it in a spray bottle. Spray on windows and mirrors and use it as a glass cleaner. No streaks! Find more Homemade Cleaners Recipes here.

9. Rinse Agent. Add a bit of hydrogen peroxide in your dishwasher to use for a rinse agent.

10. Clean Mold. Have a mold issue somewhere in your house? Clean it with a rag doused in hydrogen peroxide. The mold will go away and the area should become semi-resistant to it coming back.

Clean Cloth Diapers

11. Stain Remover. Dab a small amount of hydrogen peroxide on a clothing stain before you put it in the wash to remove stains. You may want to try this on a small area of the clothing first before using it on a large spot, just in case.

12. Prolong the Life of Veggies. Use 1/4 cup of Hydrogen Peroxide in a sink full of water and soak veggies and other produce for about 15 to 20 minutes to clean and help preserve the freshness of the produce. Rinse well before eating.

13. Sprouting Seeds. If you are trying to get some seeds to sprout add 1 teaspoon of hydrogen peroxide to one pint of water and soak seeds over night. Rinse off the next day. This should help your seeds sprout faster. Learn how to Start Seeds Indoors here.

14. Acne Treatment. Dab a little hydrogen peroxide on a pimple to help clear it up faster.

15. Finger Nail Whitener. To make your finger nails whiter, soak them in Hydrogen Peroxide or use a cotton ball and rub the peroxide on your nails.

16. Soften Corns and Calluses. Soak your feet in a mixture of warm water and hydrogen peroxide and the corns and calluses should soften.

17. Ear Infections. Place 5 drops of hydrogen peroxide in the affected ear(s). Let it sit in the ears for a few minutes, then allow it to flow out. Repeat 3 or 4 times a day for a few days until the ear infection is gone.

18. Toothache. To help relieve some of the pain from a toothache, hold hydrogen peroxide in your mouth for 10 minutes before rinsing out.

19. Clean Grout. To clean up grubby grout, make sure the area is dry and then spray hydrogen peroxide on the grout. Let it sit and soak in for a few hours before scrubbing it away with soapy water.

20. Cutting Board. Spray hydrogen peroxide on your cutting board after washing off the board to kill any remaining germs.

Remember to make sure that any hydrogen peroxide used on your body and on your food is “food grade.” Even so, it’s still not safe to ingest it so stick to using it externally and if using it in your mouth, just always be sure to spit it out and rinse your mouth after.

  1. I use H2O2 for a lot of things but you have several I haven’t tried. One you didn’t post is in the pool instead of Chlorine. We have done this now for several years.

    1. Planet earth’s water and Magnetism
      Using magnetism to treat water
To reduce nuisance staining and sanitize water
      Magnetized water UGH–Energized water UGH–Phlogiston-UGH
      Introduction
The planet Earth’s water (a fluid) is a complex mixture of elements and chemical compounds (solid, liquids and gases). . In its very pure state water is diamagnetic when placed in a strong magnetic field it will push away from the magnetic field. It also has the ability to suspend particles (cloudy water) or dissolve particles (clear or colored water)
When this complex mixture is exposed to a magnetic field, all of the suspended or dissolved elements/compounds follow their own magnetic susceptibility characteristic.
But wait a second —let us put a name on the material in the water–let us call it Waterdust
Definition : Waterdust –NOUN a collective noun for all the dissolved or suspended particles, junk, minerals, chemicals , gases, and elements in the water (or other fluids) . Thus there may be Ferromagnetic, Anti-ferromagnetic, Paramagnetic or Diamagnetic Waterdust, particles –

Basic Premise–Waterdust particles will interact with a magnetic field as follows:– if the particles are ferromagnetic (iron, nickel, cobalt)) or if paramagnetic (oxygen, iron rust., E. coli bacteria) they will be drawn into the magnetic field or if diamagnetic they will be repelled from the magnetic field (bismuth, water etc) or if anti-ferromagnetic they will be unaffected by field (most plastic materials)
One of many changes of subject
Searched the internet for precise definitions of Magnetized water and energized water and could not find any —- however, testimonials (by PhD’s , and others) as to what it does —curing, helping plants grow etc—no mention of the waterdust.
      .
      Search #1 —Farming
Some environmentalists are improving the yield and health of plants by adding small amounts of Hydrogen Dioxide (AKA Hydrogen Peroxide) to the irrigation water.

The before and after photos of the hydrogen dioxide (AKA hydrogen peroxide) treated fields look just like the ones published. for “Magnetized Water“ provided by companies selling magnetic devices through which water flows to irrigate fields.

      Search #2–Physical therapy
Russian physicians have reported many cures of many ailments using “Magnetized Water” that has been magnetically treated (passed it through a magnetic field) before giving it to their patients

The reported cures mimic almost exactly American physician’s reports that treated patients with dilute solutions of Hydrogen Dioxide.

      Search #3 Farming and thunderstorms
Researchers in California in 1980 and researchers in Florida in 1985 have reported significant amounts of Hydrogen Dioxide in rain water during an electrical storm.

Some farmers have noted that their crops fare so much better after a thunder storm than when they water the fields. (about the same quantity of water).

Catalyst—NOUN– a substance/environment that increases the rate of a chemical reaction without itself undergoing any permanent change.
Catalytic reactions are preferred in environmentally friendly green chemistry due to the reduced amount of waste generated, as opposed to stoichiometric reactions in which all reactants are consumed and more side products are formed. Many transition metals and transition metal complexes are used in catalysis as well. Catalysts called enzymes are important in biology .An environmental catalyst speeds up an environmental related process. It is useful in conversion of green raw materials and waste into energy.
Thus a Magnetic field can be considered a catalyst—The earth‘s magnetic field and/or electromagnetic field, and/or a magnets magnetic field.

Evidence of Oxygen being drawn into a magnetic field
The attached photos explains it all —
      Evidence 1
The black/gray area on the equator of the BB is raw Iron (which was galvanized)—and which measured .170 inch diameter before being assembled in the filter —–but now it measures .168 inch in diameter —where did the material go—-the red/rust colored bands to either end of the bb is probably red iron oxide (paramagnetic),
      Photo # 1
The BB’s were used to separate the ceramic magnet discs to allow water to flow between the magnets into the supporting core I
It took about a month or so for this visual catalytic evidence to be seen
      Evidence 2
Further evidence of the catalytic effect of a strong magnetic field (which takes must less time)— is to use two neodymium magnetic disks and separate them with galvanized iron BB’s and submerge them in condensate Dehumidifier water.
      Photo #2

The space between the magnetic disks was filled with as many galvanized iron BB’s as would fit.—the water used was essentially rain water (a dehumidifier condensate)

      Evidence 3
In the final evidence of the catalytic effect of magnetism is the oxidation of the Chromium plating on the neodymium magnets and the oxidation of the exposed neodymium magnet material when separated by ceramic magnetic discs (a fully oxidized material-not not affected by the oxygen
This evidence took about a week of immersion in the Dehumidifier Water

      Prolog-some repetition
Water, liquids and air are fluids and may be cloudy or clear depending upon the quantity of the substances in the fluid. An atom or molecule of a material is invisible to the eye when suspended or floating in a fluid, however these particles will react to all the forces of nature that is gravity, magnetic, electrostatic–and fluid dynamic forces while being suspended, dissolved or floating in the fluid.
Dry logs float in water, a helium balloon defies gravity and floats upward in the air. oil and water separate, a submarine navigates in the ocean, a bismuth needle defies gravity and floats in a strong magnetic field.
One other characteristics of water it that it is diamagnetic that is it moves away from a magnetic field and has a magnetic susceptibility of about minus 13
      Oxygen
Oxygen (paramagnetic) was discovered in 1772 by Carl Wilhelm Scheele, but he did not publish his discovery until after Joseph Priestly had published his independent discovery of oxygen in 1775. As a result, Priestly is usually credited with the discovery. And one of oxygen’s characteristic is a magnetic susceptibility of about Plus 3,449 (big)
It is generally accepted that Lavisher’s great accomplishments in chemistry largely stem from his changing the science from a qualitative to a quantitative one. Lavoisier is most noted for his discovery of the role oxygen plays in combustion. He recognized and named oxygen (1778) and hydrogen (1783) and opposed the phlogiston theory. Lavoisier helped construct the metric system, wrote the first extensive list of elements, and helped to reform chemical nomenclature. He predicted the existence of silicon (1787) and was also the first to establish that sulfur was an element (1777) rather than a compound. He discovered that, although matter may change its form or shape, its mass always remains the same.

Water, Hydrogen Peroxide (Magnetic susceptibility of about minus 17) and lightning
A lightning stroke produces a short duration strong electric and magnetic field emanating outward from the stroke for thousands of feet. Diamagnetic and paramagnetic ions, compounds and elements will either go toward the magnetic field or go away from the field (a mad scramble within the fluid–and a lot of collisions) also the electric field ionizes any thing in the surrounding air.
In 1980 Gregory L. Kok measured the amount of Hydrogen peroxide in the rain water during thunder storms—-WOW what a surprise—–

Hydrogen Peroxide is formed from the dissolved Oxygen in the water combining with the water at the surface of the magnet –and once formed H2O2 is pushed into the adjacent water.—(Both water and H2O2 are diamagnetic!!) and mix freely.

The above phenomenon is the reason for magnetically TREATED water is good for plants and people!!—small amounts of Hydrogen Peroxide sanitize the water

      The problem
Lead, iron, manganese and other particles in household water can be harmful / Irritating for consumption. White clothing may be turned gray while being laundered if particles accumulate in the water. Gray and black rings can form in a toilet bowl if the water is not filtered properly. Iron can reduce the effectiveness of reverse osmosis filter systems. A suitable solution is desired. What will attract or repel dissolved/suspended Waterdust in drinking water, household water, industrial water , recycled water, etc

The need for a procedure / Filter

A 4 micron string wound filter gets very black in a month (see photo ) and has to be replaced.
The stale water in the second floor toilet bowl precipitates a black scum when not used for a month or so– thus these black colloidal particles are only partially removed. by the filter and by the home (salt type) water softener

A review of literature and water systems as well as flame test of the black crud indicates it may contain manganese or iron

Further review of literature about manganese and iron compounds indicates that there is black powdered oxide of both manganese and iron that are paramagnetic, that is, it will be attracted to a magnet.–the collected black sediment/crud does sticks to a magnet.

      The crud accumulation after a month of home use. Standard string wound 5 micron filter element. Only the earth’s magnetic field is present. See Column 1 in spreadsheet below for ICP sediment analysis (a Lot more elements than iron and manganese –EH}

At this point, a new string wound filter was spirally wrapped with a flexible ferrite magnet tape and put in service. The magnetic tape became coated with black material and sediment continued to precipitate in the bottom of the housing–See Column 2 for ICP analysis of sediment

At this point in the development of the Catalytic Filter System/Procedure-
Waterdust has been affected by the weak earth’s magnetism and the stronger magnetic field caused by a flexible permanent magnet tape wrapped around the string wound filter.

Yes this filter spirally wrapped with a flexible magnet captured the black crud that causes the new white clothes to turn gray!

How does one find out what stuff (waterdust) is in ones water

One answer send water sample to laboratory for analysis that can provide inductively-coupled plasma mass spectrometry —–(ICP-MS)—– is a type of mass spectrometry which is capable of detecting metals and several non-metals at concentrations as low as one part in 10E-15 (parts per quadrillion, ppq) on non-interfered low-background isotopes. This is achieved by ionizing the sample with inductively coupled plasma and then using a mass spectrometer to separate and quantify those ions.

  2. I’m a veterinarian, we use hydrogen peroxide to remove blood stains from the hair of light colored dogs. I would caution using it too often on wounds though, it kills germs but also kills the good cells that are trying to heal the wound. It works great if you have a really dirty or infected wound but after it’s cleaned up I would leave it alone or use triple antibiotic ointment. (I really enjoy your site by the way)

    1. every time I use H2O2, Food grade 3%, on a wound(mixed with a little water) it heals very quickly. I have tried this many times. When I don’t use it doesn’t heal quickly. I always have it in my hand bag when am out or traveling I spray it on my hand instead of sanitizer gels.

      1. When using H2O2 for wound care, always dilute it to half strength with water. This minimizes the adverse effects of prroxide as mentioned above and actually speeds the hesling process.

    2. I would use pure raw honey after the wound is clean. Honey has natural antibacterial elements and healing properties, cuts down on all the medicines we use.

  3. I live on the coast of OR. and we are plagued with mold and mildew here!!! I used to use bleach on the walls to remove it, but you would have to leave the house because of the smell. Somebody told me about peroxide and it has been a blessing!!! I put it in a spray bottle, spray the offending area, let it sit till the mold or mildew disappears, then wipe clean.

    1. If the mold comes back it’s because it wasn’t really killed. You only wiped off the surface. The roots are still there.

  4. Great list. I was once told by a vet when my little dog swallowed two cotton balls with acetone on them to give her a teaspoon of hydrogen peroxide to make her vomit. It worked like a charm. But, I would check with a vet before trying it again.

    1. Yes we often use hydrogen peroxide to make dogs vomit but always check with your vet first. Some chemicals that dogs may ingest cause more damage on the way back up and some foreign bodies can get stuck in the esophagus, which is much more serious than being in the stomach.

  5. I can personally vouch for peroxide as a stain removed. Works for blood stains better than anything else I’ve ever tried!

  6. I use it for joint pain and arthritis. Take a cloth soaked in peroxide and then rub the affected area. Do this daily for a week and the pain will stay gone for weeks if it creeps back apply again. Some people even love this so much they buy food grade peroxide and drink it but I don’t recommend that.

  7. For sanitizing countertops and cutting boards, you want to keep 2 spray bottles, one with peoxide (this should be opaque–screw a spray top onto the peoxide bottle, just cut the spray top straw to the right length for the peroxide bottle). First squirt the counter with one, then the other. Kills germs at least as well as bleach, but you can’t keep them in the same bottle.

I have found that having peroxide in the spray bottle is very handy for cleaning my kids’ owies and for such small sanitizing jobs as toothbrushes that have gotten onto the floor or into the wrong mouth.

I’ve also found that the same vinegar and peroxide routine that I use for countertops and cutting boards is an effective underarm deodorant.

  8. As a Nurse Practitioner and a Certified Advanced Wound Care NP I can not back up the Veterinarian enough on his comment on NOT using hydrogen Peroxide on wounds, except for the initial cleansing after an injury. It can delay healing by months, years or even permanently, depending on the location, depth, and blood supply to the wound. http://sciencequestionswithchris.wordpress.com/2013/04/04/how-often-should-hydrogen-peroxide-be-used-to-treat-wounds/

  9. this works great as a dandruff deterent. I am a natural blonde, so the lighting of hair doesn’t bother me. I use this once a week, deluted with water. as a rinse. It has really helped me!

  10. You are missing the most important use of Hydrogen Peroxide!
    TO DE-SKUNK your DOG!
    1 qt Hydrogen Peroxide
    1/4 cup baking soda
    1-2 tsp Dawn dishwashing liquid
Mix together in a medium mixing bowl.
Using rubber gloves and an old sponge or wad of paper towels, soak dog with mixture. Make dog sit for 10 minutes. Shampoo as usual.
My dog has chased “black-and-white kitties” only twice, but it worked both times. (His white fir was very white, but his black fur turned dark brown).

    1. I got to say this definitely works. My terriers and dachshunds love to hunt and when they find a skunk. I find the Hydrogen Peroxide, baking soda and dish washing liquid . and it’s here we go again.

    2. Yes, works wonders to De-Skunk, I used this recipe 3 times last year on my pup…she’s a slow learner…lol

  11. Hydrogen Peroxide worked well in getting rid of my Psoriasis. Soak a cotton ball and rub vigorously till white cap appears. I would do this about once a week. It’s all gone. It’s certainly better than any prescription drug and no side effects.

  12. Another use for hydrogen peroxide. It’s awonderful cleaner for bird cages. As anyone who owns a parrot can tell you, their feces harden into cement like substance that is extremely difficult to remove. Before discovering the H.P solution, I used to take the cage outdoors in the summertime and turn the pressure washer on it [Dudley left indoors of course]. That works fairly well, but I live in Northern B.C., Canada, and that is definitely not practical at -20f. A friend suggested using peroxide, so I thought Id give it a try. Anything has got to be better than using bleach and a wire brush! I sprayed it on full strength, and to my amazement, with only a moment of soaking, everything wiped off with paper towel. Its not toxic like bleach, and so much easier to use, you don’t have to rinse, and rinse and rinse! And another benefit, the cost is not prohibitive. [just don’t leave your bird in the cage while cleaning it, the HP can sting his eyes]. By the way, I just discovered your site, LOVE IT

    1. Be very careful using HP on carpet – it can bleach the color. Spot test first on a small area that can be covered later such as in a corner where an end table or chair can hide it or under/behind the sofa. If you have leftovers, that’s an even better place to test.

  13. I use hydrogen peroxide to take blood out of fabrics. From shirts to carpet to furniture. Just sabot on and the blood stain will start to disappear. Just keep dabbing until its gone. I learned this in the dental office when I was a dental assistant.

  14. How long did it take to start clearing up
I have it on both legs both elbows. Strange
as it may seem it is worse on my left side
Do u use anything else to help clear it up

  15. CAUTION! Hydrogen peroxide, being a debriding agent, will damage your infected eardrum if used in an infected ear. It can, and very likely will, cause loss of a portion of eardrum and hearing loss. Never use HP in your ears unless directed to do so by your ENT physician.

  16. I came to this page, and glad I did, but I came here to see how to keep algae out of ponds. I have a relatively small pond but I get the most obnoxious gray algae. I turns my pond water gray and you cannot see 6 inches below the water. I bought 29 feeder gold fish and they all died this year. I have never had this problem. There are no fish in the pond now, so maybe it won’t matter, well, except I have a frog or two that live happily in the waters, and I don’t want to hurt them. How much Hydrogen Peroxide should we add to make a change? Do not want to over do and don’t want to waste it by underdoing it. Thanks

  17. The soap I been makin for my dishes not cleaning –1cup each borax, bakin soda, 1/4 cup salt, 2pkg. Lemon kool aid. What do I need to add?
    Thanks

  18. 5ml (1tsp) of household hydrogen peroxide (3%) per gallon of water for your houseplants. Every three waterings unless your using rainwater, the you can use it everytime. It will kill any bacteria or pathogens in the rainwater and supply oxygen to your roots.

  19. We have HORRIBLE water here where I live in northwestern Indiana. Without our water softener it is light orange. Even with the softener and bleach our white clothes would eventually turn a dull yellowish orange color. I finally had to stop buying anything white, except for socks and underwear. I read about using peroxide instead of bleach and it works! Our whites are actually staying white now, and I might even get bold enough to purchase a white shirt.

  20. One lady said she usues hydrogen peroxide to tenerize her meat. She let it soak in it for a few mins and then rinsed it and cook it. I have never tried it but found it interesting.

  21. I was told by a doctor not to use Peroxide on cuts and such because it kills the good tissue around the wound besides cleaning out the cut. So, I am a bit confused.
