Why A Good Mattress Is Important in a Simple Life
Sometimes the days can feel so long, especially in the late fall when we are finishing things up around the farmstead for the gardening season and starting to prepare everything for winter. We have to make sure our animals are ready and will be warm, the house has to be as winter-proof as possible, and we like to have things ready to deal with the long cold season. Needless to say, at the end of the day I’m usually tired, sore, and ready to fall into bed.
Through our married life me and my hubby have had several mattresses. The first one we had was a hard-as-a-rock mattress that we purchased at a discount. The second was a camper mattress that was nothing special (until we made it more bearable). And the third mattress is one that we picked up used out of someone’s storage locker because we just needed something to sleep on. Although that one provided a place to sleep, most nights I’d have rather slept on the floor. When we laid in the mattress it was almost like we were sitting up because the mattress dipped so bad. Now, we finally have a mattress that we absolutely love and it’s making our “simple life” so much easier.
I’ve never been a good sleeper. I curl up in a little ball and sleep very lightly, any little noise will disturb me. As you can imagine, since we’ve had kids I’ve gotten very little sleep. Not only have we had 2 poor sleepers, for a while our oldest son had some issues with breathing and had to be hooked up to a monitor while we has sleeping so we would know that he was still breathing. Now I have a toddler that thinks it’s fun to get mom and dad up several times a night just because…oh they won’t be little forever. 🙂

I’ve also had issues with back and neck pain over the years. My neck is straight instead of having that nice curve to it which gives me quite a few issues including bad headaches that refuse to go away except with chiropractic treatment. During the phase of our last mattress (the one with the dips), the pain was very bad. I was suffering from headaches and having to see the chiropractor at least once a week.
I learned about intelliBED from one of my blogging friends. I’d had friends tell me about their nicer beds and how much they loved them but I could never seem to justify the price in my mind. But after dealing with so many headaches I was willing to give it a try. (intelliBED offers a 60 day trial so it was a good way to test it out and see what we thought before making a commitment.

intelliBED mattresses are made in the USA with carefully chosen materials such as organic cotton and the medical grade Intelli-Gel. Intelli-Gel does not contain the same materials as a mattress with memory foam in it so it does not produce off-gassing like a regular mattress. Intelli-Gel supports your pressure points better than a traditional memory foam. A mattress that does not properly support your body will cause you to toss and turn through the night which disrupts your sleep, whether you realize it or not.
We chose the King size intelliBED mattress which is of regular firmness (they also offer a value mattress for those on a tighter budget!). We added the Regular Motion Damping so if one of us moved in our sleep the other one would not be disturbed. After speaking with those at intelliBED we also decided to add the Side Sleeper Regular Pillows since we’d been sleeping on the same pillow for the past 8 years. (Kind of gross when I think about it!) Adding the pillows ended up being the best decision that we made!

Our new bed arrived shortly after we ordered it. The men that delivered it moved our old mattress and installed the new one for us so we didn’t have to do anything. That was very nice since I wasn’t looking forward to trying to figure out how to haul a bed upstairs! I thought that perhaps it would take a while for us to adjust to the new bed but honestly we loved it right away!
After about 2 weeks of sleeping in the new intelliBED I noticed something odd, when I woke up I had actually been sleeping on my back, not curled in a little ball like I had slept my entire life. When I mentioned this to my husband he also told me that he’d realized he’d been sleeping the same way as well.

It’s now been several months since the arrival of our intelliBED and I’ve noted several things that have made a big difference in our lives. First, we both sleep a deeper, better sleep. I’ve always been a ridiculously light sleeper so even though we are still waking up through the night with our little ones the rest that we are getting is better. I’ve also watched my chiropractor bills go down further and further. I went from going several times a week to going every other month and I have a feeling it will just keep getting less as time goes on. It costs an average of $50 per visit to my chiropractor so I’ve been saving about $400 a month right now on those bills, plus, of course, I feel better overall and have much fewer headaches than I’ve ever had.
As you can tell from our experience above, we’ve been very happy with our intelliBED. One thing that I’ve learned over the last several years is that you can’t always go with the cheapest item at the store, so many times it’s worth it in the long run to invest a little more of your hard-earned cash on a better item in the first place. It can also save you many headaches (literally!).

What are some features that you look for in a mattress?
This post is sponsored by IntelliBED. IntelliBED provided us with a mattress to review however all thoughts and ideas on the product are my own.
Thanks for this review, we are in desperate need of a new mattress & have been debating about what to get as I also get frequent migraine headaches & wonder if part of that is from the mattress. I saw the air pump you showed – does that mean you can change the firmness of the bed if needed?
The air pump is just in the pillow so it changes the firmness of the pillow. The mattress firmness remains consistent but they do have several different options of varying firmness to chose from.
this info came at the right time. A few years ago, we spend a lot of money on an adjustable mattress and we just do not like it. I have been feeling guilty about spending money again on another mattress, but what is the price of a good night’s sleep? Hubby and I just agreed that in lieu of exchanging Christmas gifts, we would invest in a mattress that will help us to sleep well. I love the idea of the trial period. thanks for sharing this.
Your sleep position can also make a huge difference. Side sleepers need a firmer pillow to keep their head still aligned between their shoulders. Back sleepers should make sure their pillow isn’t too firm, and stomach sleepers should try to train their body to sleep in a different position. It’s so hard on your neck to sleep on your stomach!
