Yogurt Fruit Dip Recipe
I love fresh fruit all year round, but everyone knows that fruit tastes 100 times better when it’s in season! Late spring through fall is the perfect time to enjoy all that wonderful in-season fruit, everything from berries to apples. (my favorite!)
If you are beginning to feel tired of eating plain fresh fruits and veggies all of the time, making an easy dip recipe or finding another simple way to use or cook them is a great way to keep from getting burned out.
That’s why I’m excited to share this easy fruit dip recipe with you today for inspiration.
This homemade fruit dip recipe comes from my Granny. It seems a little different, but it’s very tasty and easy to make!
Growing up during the Depression and living a very frugal lifestyle for her whole life, my Granny has some excellent recipes made with simple ingredients, just like this simple fruit dip. Even at 100, she’s still willing to share her knowledge and expertise in the frugal living arena.
I haven’t yet posted my Granny’s story here on the blog, but I have shared the stories of her mother and my great-grandmother, and you can read them all under A South Dakota Prairie Story.
Ingredients in Yogurt Fruit Dip
- Sour Cream or Yogurt. My Granny used sour cream in her recipe. This may have been cheaper than yogurt for her. The recipe works just fine either way. Plain yogurt works, but so does vanilla yogurt, or Greek yogurt.
- Brown Sugar. This is the sweetener in this recipe. Brown sugar helps to give it a deeper flavor than white sugar. You could also use honey or maple syrup instead.
- Cream Cheese. This will help give our dip a little more tang and make it thicker.
Yogurt Fruit Dip Recipe
This delicious Yogurt Fruit Dip Recipe was passed down from my granny and such a special treat to serve alongside fruit.
Ingredients
- 1 cup Yogurt or Sour Cream
- 1/2 cup Brown Sugar
- 4 ounces Cream Cheese
Instructions
-
Mix all ingredients together until the sugar has “melted” into the yogurt and cream cheese. Serve with your favorite fruits.
Recipe Notes
This also makes a good “dressing” for fruit salad! For a simple fruit salad, mix sliced bananas, grapes, apples, and strawberries and fold in a small amount of the Yogurt Fruit Dip Recipe and stir until the fruit is lightly coated.
I don’t like to make big meals on hot summer days, so I enjoy this simple fruit dip with yogurt and some fresh fruit as a cool lunch! Or to make a cool, no-bake dessert to serve alongside your fresh garden veggies with whatever you make for supper.
This recipe is also great for your kids to try new fruits! Kids love to dip things and are more willing to try something new when they have a familiar, tasty treat to dip it in.
Storing Leftover Fruit Dip
Place any leftovers in an airtight container in the fridge to enjoy later. The dip should be good for up to a week after you make it, but it may need to be stirred before eating again as it could get a little runny.
What to Serve the Yogurt Fruit Dip With
There are so many tasty things you can enjoy in the fruit dip! Here are just a few to give you an idea.
- Pretzels
- Graham Crackers
- Cookies
- Kiwi
- Mango?
- Pineapple
- Banana Slices
- Apple Slices
- Blueberries, Raspberries, or other berries (on toothpicks)
Variations to the Yogurt Dip Recipe
Want to change it up a bit? Here are some ideas!
- Add a bit of lemon juice or lemon zest
- Add a splash of orange juice or orange zest
- Top it with fresh mint
- Blend in some lime juice or lime zest
- Add vanilla extract

The sugar in the dip will cause it to get runny when stored in the fridge. To deal with this issue, simply re-stir the dip before serving.
If you use a dairy-free cream cheese and yogurt, this dip could be dairy-free.

For a really yummy and healthy peanut butter dip,
empty a cup of nonfat vanilla yogurt into a mixing bowl.
Now fill that empty yogurt cup with crunchy peanut butter just like you would a measuring cup.
Empty peanut butter into the bowl with the yogurt and mix them together well.
Serve and enjoy with apples, celery or any other peanut butter friendly food!
This dip gives you calcium from the yogurt and Tablespoon for Tablespoon is half the fat of peanut butter alone.
When I teach kids a lesson on making healthy snacks and we make this, there are never, ever any leftovers! 🙂
This recipe sounds super yummy and simple too! My kind of recipe will have to give this a try. Thanks for sharing. Found from Pintastic Pinteresting Party.

I love simple recipes, and if they’re from Granny, you know they have to be amazing! And anything with cream cheese in it is golden in my book. 🙂 Thanks so much for sharing this with us at Merry Monday! Pinning!
I love “old time recipes”. Thanks Merissa for sharing your granny’s recipes. My biggest regret is not jotting down recipes while my mom was still alive. Now I definitely appreciate these “passed down” recipes.
Other it plain yoghurt?
I like to cut the sugar way back when a recipe has cream, cream cheese or yogurt. Milk products have a natural sweetness so a lot of sugar is not needed.
