Today we celebrate 4 years of blogging at Little House Living. I know I say it every year but I’m still amazed that this little thought in the back of my mind has turned into this site. Never would I have imagined that the blog would take our family to where it is today.
4 years ago I was working a regular part time job that had somehow turned into 60 hours a week. I was exhausted and I very much disliked working for an unorganized company (that’s my ocd kicking in for ya!) and on top of it I was feeling the bug to start a family and I knew I didn’t want to be working when that happened.
But I still felt like I needed something so I decided to just start a blog to tell my life story, be as much of an encouragement as I could, and help others get through the hard times that life throws at us. Thus Little House Living was born. I designed the site with the help of my husband who did all the graphics (and still does!). I blogged here and there when I could, pretty sure that no one followed me anyways.
Later in the year I had my first opportunity come up. I attended my first blog conference and learned just how deep I was in and how much I loved this little world I’d entered. From there, opportunities started to come in faster, my blog traffic grew steadily and my little dream became bigger and bigger. Today I’ve worked with companies and news stations and brands and even gotten to travel places for work. I never dreamed of any of that when I started Little House Living.
Today I thought I’d answer a couple questions about blogging here on Little House Living.
What about your family?
My family is and always will be my number 1 priority. I wake up before everyone else does so I have time to work. I work additional hours during naptime and I work another hour or 2 in the evenings after my husband gets home. The rest of our time is spent taking care of our family and household. I used to try and work all the time (before we had a family) and found that’s a very good way to get burned out.
Who helps with Little House Living?
For the first 3 years it was just me, my hubby doing occasional design work and some tech work here and there (I’m not very technically inclined!). Now we have 5 contributors, an additional tech person, and a few other ladies that help me with some other small blog tasks. Rest assured that your emails and Facebook messages and comments are ALWAYS answered directly by me and never will be by someone else. I love connecting with you all!
Where do you get your ideas?
From life. Me and my contributors always blog about things we actually use and have done in our regular daily lives. It’s all real life here!
Do you have a life outside of the house?
I really try to but I’m pretty much a homebody anyways. We are the kind of family that has just a few good friends and spends quite a bit of time with other family members. Even though I do talk about our real daily life and what we do here on the blog I know I’m not very open about our personal family life, however that is to protect the identity of my family. (I know you all are awesome but there are some scary people out there!)
Do you ever get down about the blog?
I will always love writing and I love writing about all the topics we talk about here. Blogging has it’s set of challenges but as of yet they haven’t proved to be overly difficult (unless you count my panicking every time my server goes down!). The one thing that’s been hard for me is the trash comments and emails I’ve gotten. Although they aren’t a daily occurrence they do happen and they are very disheartening. If you don’t like an article I’d rather you just pass on by it rather than tell me how horrible you think it was. Remember that hours of work, research, and photography went into putting that article up and if it’s not your thing just move along.
Well I’m ready for another 4 great years (and beyond), aren’t you? I love hearing from you by email with your constructive comments for the site (and even for some of my struggles!). Feel free to contact me anytime by email, or even by snail mail!
