Life has gotten a little crazy around here lately. In case you missed my post earlier this week, we are moving. And not just moving across town but rather, across the state and back into a camper…downsizing to a space roughly 15% of our current space. To say that things are a little hectic would be an understatement. Have you ever tried to get rid of 75% of your belongings in 6 weeks?
How a Meal Kit Service Can Be a Blessing
I’ve been looking for ways to make life easier right now. Quick meals, less clothing choices, laid back schooling…anything that will help us to stick with our regular routine the best that we can while still allowing us that time to pack, clean, and get rid of things we won’t be needing.
In the past, I’ve seen the ads for various meal kit delivery services and I’ve wondered what they would be like. I recently had the chance to try out Blue Apron and finally got to answer my questions about the service. Today I’m going to share my thoughts with you in case you’ve been wondering too! Plus if you’d like to try them out, Blue Apron is offering Little House Living readers $40 of their first 2 weeks when you click here: Blue Apron Discount.
I ordered the 4 person menu that contained 3 different meals. It came right on the correct delivery date that I specified and was packaged well. The fresh goodies and the meal ingredients were near the top and the meats were under a large piece of ice in the bottom. Everything was nice and cool. I’ve ordered meats and refrigerated goods many times in the mail before so I definitely know what a good package is and this was one of them. 🙂
After receiving the box, I placed everything in the fridge that needed to be refrigerated and took a look at the recipes that were included. I felt like I was going to feel like a professional chef on a TV show with all of my ingredients pre-measured…fancy!
When you are moving, all of your current local friends and neighbors want to spend as much time with you as they can. While I’m totally fine with this and want to spend as much time with them as I can too, my house just isn’t perfectly equipped for dinner parties when I’m in the middle of packing! For my first Blue Apron meal, I decided to make the pasta dish that was included the next night after getting the box when a friend came over for supper.
I appreciated the step by step photo instructions while I was making the dish so I knew just how to put together the recipe, even though I’d never made it before. Something that I really liked was that the amount of ingredients included were just enough for the recipe with no waste. Since we are right in the middle of a “No Food Waste” Challenge in our Facebook group, I was happy that I wouldn’t have too much of an ingredient that I probably wouldn’t have another use for.
Doesn’t that look delicious? It was fun to put together a meal that was a little out of the norm for me and that used different ingredients than I would normally use. I thought of it as a fun little cooking “class” that I got to do in the comfort of my own home! Plus our dinner guest enjoyed his meal and I was happy that I could put together a nice meal without having to go through the effort of shopping or planning. During our time of stress, that was exactly what I needed!
The next night I decided to put together the steak meal for a special “date night” in with my hubby. It was nice to take a short break from getting ready for our rummage sale to have a relaxing evening with my husband.
Another thing that I liked about the meals is that side dishes were included. We loved the roasted carrots that we made with the steak dinner. I’m going to be making those again!
Doesn’t this meal look delicious?
Ways that a Meal Kit Service Can Be a Blessing
There are so many other ways you can use a meal kit service like Blue Apron to be a blessing in your life or in someone else’s. Here are a few that I was thinking of!
Families with New Babies
Not sure what to get a family that just brought home a new baby? If you don’t want to just add another casserole to their freezer, a meal kit service could be a great fresh way to feed their family.
Families Going Through a Loss or Hardship
Ordering a meal kit service for a family that is experiencing a difficult time or a loss can be such a kind gesture. This works especially well if you aren’t in close proximity to the family.
We used part of this kit for a date night meal and it worked wonderfully for that! You could gift a meal kit service as an anniversary or wedding gift or any special couple.
For a Homebound Friend or Relative
If there is someone in your lift that is homebound and can’t get to the grocery store or a restaurant, a meal kit service would be a fun and thoughtful gift!
As a pre-Holiday Gift
If you know someone that is going to be busy with company around Christmas, Easter, or any holiday, it might be a blessing to them to receive a meal kit service the week before the holiday so they don’t have the extra stress of making certain meals when they are already planning on a big meal for the holiday.
These are just a few ideas on how you can use a meal kit service to bless others or even in your own time of stress and need. During our stressful time of moving, it was fun to feel like we had some special meals to enjoy as a family and to enjoy with others that I didn’t have to plan, shop, or prep for.
