I think we as couponers and deal hunters are blessed. We know how to shop, we get awesome deals, we make it work with what we have, and we make an attempt to be happy with what we have. We may not have as much as some people but we know that what we have is a blessing.
It’s getting colder outside, we are starting to turn on our heaters and furnaces, making hot chocolate and being with our families. It’s the time of year we start thinking about buying gifts for friends and family members and wondering what we will get.
Ever since I was little my parents taught me to give back. Especially at this time of year when many of us only focus on ourselves, and yet there are others out there that aren’t going to get a warm Thanksgiving meal or a Christmas present. I used to always participate in Operation Christmas Child, and I loved buying gifts for a child that I knew might not get anything else.
As couponers we get items for free alot. Just this week I picked up 4 boxes of Swiss Miss Hot Chocolate for free and 2 boxes of Stove Top Stuffing for .04 each. I’m not going to use the stuffing but I knew I should pick it up anyway since I wanted to stop at Target. I knew that even if I don’t use it there is someone out there that probably isn’t a couponer like me and isn’t getting their food for free.
I feel like one of my jobs in life is to help people learn how to shop well, use coupons, find the good deals, and scope out sales. However I know that not everyone will be into couponing. Maybe some don’t have a computer and printer to print out coupons or maybe some don’t have the $2 to spend every Sunday on a newspaper to get coupons. And I know that those people I can help in a different way.
In other words I’m all about “Give a man a fish….teach a man to fish….” but like I said above I know that it’s not always possible or probable to teach and sometimes I just have to give. This holiday season I’ll be collecting all sorts of things that I can get for free and I’ll be taking it down to the local food back and other local donation areas to give to those that I can’t “teach to fish”.
I want to challenge every single one of my readers to try and donate at least ONE item this holiday season, either to your local food pantry, Salvation Army, rescue mission, ect. Personally I’m going to take my food items to the food pantry and I’m going to take my personal and toiletry items to WAVI.
To make it easier for you, for the rest of the year I will be posting on Thursday or Friday everything that you can get for free that week. Then all you need to do is pick up some of those freebies when you go to the store anyways that week and you have something to donate that basically cost you nothing but a little time.
Then while you collect to donate or once you have something you are taking to donate I would like you to take a picture. Whether it’s one item or one box full or items or one truck full of items I don’t care. I want to see the pictures! Send them to [email protected] Then around Christmastime I will share all the pictures you have sent me with the rest of the readers.
We can do this!! I can’t wait to see all the pictures together of the items we are going to give away. Together we can make such an impact in our communities.
