What We Did This Week: Family & Shopping

Welcome back to another edition of my weekly blog! If you are new here, this is just a fun little way that I write down the frugal and off-grid living things we did this week to hopefully give you some ideas and tips, and also just to be able to connect and share!

Meals We Ate
This was a “week before shopping” week so we worked on eating up odds and ends and making some space in the freezer. I don’t really plan these weeks so that it gives us the flexibility to eat up things that aren’t otherwise part of my meal plan or got missed during the month.
We ate out twice this week, which was a big deal for us! The younger kids are signed up for Book It with Pizza Hut (yes you can sign up as a homeschool teacher!) so they picked up their free pizzas during our weekly mail run. We also picked up some food during our day out shopping. We kept it under $20 for everyone (Costco!).
Here’s the Meal Plans I posted here on the blog if you need some inspiration. I have a “super frugal” edition coming out this weekend!

Projects We Worked On
We did a few things early on this week, but mostly we enjoyed our visiting family members. We check up on the spring we are developing while we went out to the far corners of the land to put up No Hunting signs (it’s been an issue lately). It’s looking nice, and we need to keep working on it!

Since we had some help (my dad), David worked on cutting down some huge dead aspen trees that were over our cliff and dragged them up to the house for firewood. The more dead trees we can clean up the less fire danger we will have and less danger to the kids when they are out playing in the woods. Plus tons of firewood from each tree!

Shopping I Did
Oh yes, shopping I did this week! We planned, prepped, and took the big 3 1/2 hour drive (one way!) to the city and did a big shop before winter really settles in. This was a big meat stock-up trip for us, among other things. It’s way too much to list here, but we are working on a video about the stock-up trip that will be on our YouTube channel soon. I still have to unpack our groceries this morning!
I shopped at Costco, Winco, the bread outlet store, a kid’s consignment store, Target, and Sam’s Club. I believe we spent around $1000 for everything which we’ve been saving up for during the last several months (we haven’t done a big shop since July). I’ll add it all up for the video. 🙂

The best part about going to town is coming home to our beautiful mountains. I’d be happy not ever going to town, but I know we have to sometimes!

We had snow again early on this week. The kids absolutely love it! We need some new, high-quality sleds (theirs have holes from the rocks). Any tips on where we can find some?
Have a great weekend!

I know how you feel, we lived in Montana right next to Glacier Park on 40 acres when the children were young. I loved it so much out there in the country that I only went into town for church services (17 miles) where we were pastoring. I would send hubby to town with the grocery list or other needs. He teased me that I was becoming a hermit. But the peace and quiet of the country is like a warm blanket. I so miss the mountains. Enjoy your posts I have been following you for years. Our children are all grown now and still recall with great memories the mountains, mountain lions, bears and living off grid.

Loved this, love the pictures. Thank you for sharing.
I would love to see your shopping haul
It’s taking a little longer for us to put together the video but we will have it up as soon as we can!
Love your posts and all the great ideas.
