Are you wanting to put together a simple homemade Italian Salad Dressing Mix that you can store in your pantry and make whenever you’d like? It’s so easy! Let me show you how.
Homemade Italian Salad Dressing Mix
This Italian dressing looks like it has more spices than a typical recipe that we share here, but, it’s totally worth it. The flavor is bold and perfect! You won’t find this kind of freshness and taste in store-bought dressings. And of course, it doesn’t compare to the store bought mixes and all of their additives and fillers. This is pure Italian Dressing!
This recipe will make two, 8 ounce bottles of salad dressing. You can double or triple the batch if you want to make more of this homemade dressing mix to keep in your pantry.
I used many fresh, dried herbs from my herb garden from last year as well as some dried herbs and spices that I purchased. Growing your own herbs during the summer can be a great way to save.
Italian Salad Dressing Mix Ingredients
- Garlic granules or Garlic powder
- Rosemary
- Celery seed
- Black pepper
- Dry mustard powder
- Paprika
- Basil
- Salt
- Thyme
- Sage
- Oregano
I buy my spices, generally, in bulk from Azure Standard. I did, however, use a few that I had grown in my herb garden and dried.
How to Use the Italian Salad Dressing Mix
You can make this dressing mix into salad dressing (recipe found below) to top your favorite salad. This dressing tastes delicious when it’s over a salad also containing tomatoes and cucumbers. This is the dressing bottle that I have, shown above.
You could also use this dressing as a spice coating for potatoes, chicken, or another one of your favorite meals.
I also like to marinate meat with this mixed up salad dressing. Just place your meat in a bowl with the dressing for at least 1/2 hour before grilling or cooking.
What can I substitute for Italian seasoning packet?
Use 2 tablespoons of the mix if you are using this recipe in place of an Italian Seasoning/Dressing packet from the store in a recipe.
Can you make creamy Italian Dressing from regular Italian Dressing?
Although this recipe is for regular salad dressing, it’s very creamy since you are emulsifying the oil in the blender. If you want to make this creamy and similar to the store version, add a little bit of parmesan cheese and some mayonnaise to the recipe before blending it together.
Instructions for Making the Homemade Italian Dressing Mix
These are the dry, bulk spices. You can mix these together in a small bowl and it is ready to use. I used a little blender to blend mine together because my rosemary, basil, and oregano was home grown and not in powdered form yet.
Once the spices are mixed, you are ready to mix this up onto a liquid dressing.
This recipe will make a total of 4 Tablespoons of dry mix.
Homemade Italian Dressing Recipe
To make one batch of dressing, equal to 8 ounces, mix:
- 2 Tablespoons Dry Mix. From the recipe.
- 1/2 cup Olive Oil. You could use whatever mild vegetable oil you have on hand if you don’t want to use olive oil. Canola oil, sunflower oil, or safflower oil are all good choices as well.
- 1/4 cup Lemon Juice
- 1/4 cup Apple Cider Vinegar. You could use your choice of vinegar such as white wine vinegar, white vinegar, or red wine vinegar if you don’t want to use cider vinegar.
- 1 Tablespoon Honey
Combine all of the ingredients together in a blender. I’ve had my Blendtec Classic Blender for over 10 years and it works great!
If you want to make this more of an Italian Vinaigrette style dressing instead of the creamy blend, use a whisk to mix the ingredients together instead of the blender.
I love having this Creamy Italian Dressing in my fridge. This recipe is versatile. I use it as a lettuce salad dressing, a pasta salad dressing, and also a meat marinade.

Storing the Italian Dressing Mix and Dressing
Any extra dry mix can be stored in a mason jar with a lid in the pantry until you are ready to use it.
Leftover salad dressing can be stored in the refrigerator or on the countertop until yo are ready to use. Remember, the dressing will solidify in the fridge because of the oils in it but it can be brought to room temp before serving to make it liquid again if that’s how you prefer to store it. Shake well before serving again. Here’s the Salad Dressing Bottle I have.

I have been looking for a way to make good Italian dressing. I will be making this tomorrow. Thank you.
How long will it last?
This recipe will last at least 2 weeks if kept in a dry, cool place for storage once it’s been made into dressing. The dry mix can last on the shelf for years if stored in an airtight container.
This is a wonderful dressing! Takes a few minutes to mix up the spices as there are quite a few, but the dressing itself is quick and easy to make and the spice mix makes a lot so will last. There is so much flavor in this, much more than just about any other recipe I’ve tried. My husband really liked it too.
This is, for me, the most appealing recipe I’ve seen. Thanks!
