Honey Mustard is a simple condiment that you shouldn’t need to go to the store to get. With this basic 2 Ingredient Honey Mustard recipe, you can have it any time you want!
Homemade Honey Mustard Sauce
Honey Mustard is sweet and tangy sauce that can be made from multiple ingredients or paired down to just 2 simple ingredients. Basically, you can make it as easy or as complicated as you’d like depending on the time and the ingredients that you have.
Honey Mustard makes a wonderful dipping sauce or can also be used as a baste over your favorite meats.
Our family was never really into mustard until our middle son tried it and decided he was hooked. I guess some people just have a taste for mustard! Since we don’t all share this love with him, we mostly use Honey Mustard as a dipping sauce instead of using it over our main meals and meat.
With most things, I prefer to make the pared-down version of this sauce, versus the complicated multi-ingredient sauce with ingredients like cayenne pepper, garlic powder, greek yogurt, maple syrup, mayonnaise, tofu, and other things. No…you know…I’ll take the simple version any day.
A bonus with this version is that it’s dairy free if that’s something that you need.
Honey Mustard Ingredients
- Dijon Mustard. You can use regular mustard in this but it will be a tangier version and not all may like it. Dijon Mustard is a little bit of a calmer version of mustard and provides more of a depth of flavor.
- Honey. I like to get my honey locally when I’m able but I will also buy it in bulk from Azure Standard.
FAQs About Honey Mustard
Can you replace Dijon mustard with regular mustard?
You can use yellow mustard but the flavor will be quite different. I recommend using Dijon mustard in this recipe.
Is Dijon mustard similar to honey mustard?
Dijon mustard is an ingredient in honey mustard but it’s not similar because it doesn’t contain the sweetness of honey.
How to make homemade honey mustard without honey.
If you don’t have any honey on hand or want to make a vegan version, try a similar sweetener such as brown rice syrup or maple syrup. It will be a slightly different flavor but it should still work.
What to Serve Honey Mustard With
- Salad. Add a little mayonnaise and a bit of oil and vinegar to make this a thinner salad dressing.
- Veggies. You can use this as a dip for your vegetables or you can drizzle it over the top. It’s really good on potatoes, broccoli, cauliflower, and other hearty veggies.
- Eggs. Honey mustard can be a great drizzle over your morning eggs to take them up to the next level.
- Chicken. Of all of the meats, we like to have honey mustard with chicken. The kids really love it as a dipping sauce for Chicken Nuggets! It’s also great as a dipping sauce or a glaze for wings.
- Fries. Honey mustard is also a great dipping sauce for french fries. Sometimes we add a little more honey if it’s specifically for fries.
- Wraps and Sandwiches. Use the honey mustard as a sandwich spread for your sandwiches instead of mayo and add a drizzle of it into your wraps for extra flavor. A honey mustard plus ham sandwich is tasty!
- Salmon or Fish. You can brush the honey mustard on salmon as a glaze.
Why Make Your Own Honey Mustard
French’s Honey Mustard costs $3.24 for a 12-ounce bottle ($0.27 per ounce). It contains a minimum of 10 ingredients including natural flavors.
This Homemade Honey Mustard Sauce Recipe costs about $0.93 to make ($0.15 per ounce). It contains about 6 ingredients (depending on how many ingredients are in the Dijon that you buy/make).
Making your own means that you can whip it up any time you need a small amount and don’t have a bottle of it sitting in the back of your fridge going to waste.
Instructions for Homemade Honey Mustard
In a small bowl or medium-sized bowl, whisk together the mustard and the honey.
Combine both ingredients until the sauce is smooth.
Store the Honey Mustard in the refrigerator to use as needed. Use the sauce up within 1-2 weeks of making it. I like to store mine in a jelly-sized mason jar with a plastic lid.
