What We Did This Week: Feast Night, Firewood, and More

I had fun last week going back to my “Frugal Friday” post structure so I thought I’d do it again with this week’s pictures of what we did mixed in. Enjoy!

feast night

Meals We Ate

We mostly follow the weekly meal plans I send out on Sundays with a few adjustments based on what I personally have on hand. You can find this week’s full meal plan here.

This week was also Feast Night! Once a month we have a special dinner. I have fancy plates, table settings, and we usually serve steak since we can’t afford it more than once a month anymore! This week for feast night I made steak, roasted potatoes, buttermilk biscuits, fruit salad, and carrot cake.

Projects We Worked On

The same person who offered us free firewood last week begged us to come back for more so we did! Another trailer full of wood when we went to town for church. It’s freshly cut so it’ll be for next year, but we are still very thankful to build our stockpile.

David finished building a doorway this week inside the mudroom and he worked on resealing the windows in the addition of the house. We just can’t afford siding yet but we will seal everything up the best we can before winter.

We also worked on some painting inside the house on the snowy/rainy days when we couldn’t work outside. I love that the inside isn’t all plywood anymore like it was when we bought it!

Shopping I Did

I did one small order this week from Target since my mom can bring it to us next week when they visit ( we can’t get things shipped to our PO Box from certain companies). I took advantage of the toy and activity kit deals and bought a few Christmas gifts to put away for later. We give each of the kids 3 gifts for Christmas (plus some stocking gifts), so I’m already down 1-2 gifts per person! Shipping things here has been incredibly unreliable lately (over 6 packages “lost in the mail” in the last few months) unless it comes straight from Amazon so I’m trying to plan ahead.

No other shopping. I’m trying to save up for a trip to Costco next month so we can restock meat again.

Blog Posts I Wrote

  • Carrot Cake Mix – I’m happy to finally get this one posted. This is a great mix to make if you regularly keep carrots in your root cellar or fridge!
  • We Found an Abandoned Root Cellar – Our newest video on YouTube! All about how we redid the root cellar we found and what was hiding in it for decades!
  • Amish Oatmeal Pie – I updated this recipe this week. It’s such a frugal goodie! It’s a great alternative to “pecan pie” if you can’t have nuts.
  • Oatmeal Cream Pies – I obviously have oats on the brain this week as I updated this post as well. These are so yummy.
  • DIY Eye Makeup Remover – This is easy to make!

I’ve been posting quite a few recipes and posts lately on my Instagram channel so be sure to follow me there as well. We will have a video on our YouTube channel tomorrow (all about getting ready for winter!) and I’ll send you another meal plan this weekend so be sure and be signed up for my emails!

The yummy Carrot Cake I made this week. Perfect for all, even my chocolate-hating child! 🙂

Me and the littlest out for a hike before the snow moved in while the big kids were at youth group.

Have a great weekend!

  1. Hello from Oregon!

I just wanted to say I’m really enjoying these posts. It’s so fun to keep up with what you’re doing, and it allows those of us who live in the city to see the more personal side of homestead living.

  2. Thank you for the Frugal Friday post. I love all of your posts. I’m starting to get back into cooking more detailed dinners. It’s just my husband and I now and since January I’ve had health difficulties with discovery of a rare bone cancer. I did 6-months of weekly chemo and I’m in remission now and just have chemo once a month. God is gracious and kind.

This week so far, I made a chicken pot pie from scratch and instant pot lemon chicken thighs. Pulling out my recipes for more!

God bless you guys! Praying you can afford siding soon.
