Did you buy too much pasta and can’t use it all before it goes bad? Are you looking for the best storage idea on how to store pasta? In this blog post, I’m sharing how to store pasta long-term, so you can enjoy it for months to come.

How to Store Pasta Long Term
With winter coming, I know how important it is to have pantry staples on hand for quick and easy meals. And let’s be real, who doesn’t love a good ol’ plate of pasta?
Whether it’s spaghetti, macaroni, or penne, pasta is incredibly versatile and can be used in various kid-friendly dishes. But what do you do when you buy too much pasta and can’t use it all before it goes bad? Don’t worry, I’ve got a few solutions for you!

- Choose the right container. The first step in how to store pasta long-term is to choose the right container. You’ll want to use an airtight container that will keep out moisture and pests. I like using mason jars (gallon or half gallon size for pasta) as they are sturdy and seal tightly. If you don’t have mason jars, any airtight container will do. Just make sure it has a tight-fitting lid to keep the freshness in. Check out some of my favorite Food Storage Containers.
- Keep it in a cool, dry place. Pasta is best stored in a cool, dry place. Heat can cause the pasta to spoil more quickly so avoid storing it near the stove or any other heat source. Instead, choose a cupboard or pantry that is away from direct sunlight and has a consistent temperature. This will help extend the shelf life of your pasta.
- Consider vacuum sealing. If you really want to maximize the shelf life of your pasta, consider vacuum sealing it. Vacuum sealing removes all the air from the package, which helps prevent oxidation and spoilage. You can purchase a vacuum sealer online or at your local kitchen supply store. I don’t own a vacuum sealer but I know many that do and enjoy using it.
- Label and date containers. To keep track of how long my pasta has been stored I make sure to label and date my containers. I use a permanent marker to write the type of pasta and the date it was stored on the lid or side of the container. This also helps me keep track of what I have and its “used by” date.
- Rotate your stock. Pasta can be stored longer, but that doesn’t mean it doesn’t have a shelf life. Rotating your stock helps you ensure that you’re always using the oldest pasta first. For instance, when you buy new pasta, place it at the back of your storage area and move the older pasta to the front. This way, you’ll always be using the oldest pasta first and minimizing waste.

How do I check if pasta has gone bad?
To check if your pasta has gone bad, look for signs of mold, discoloration, or an off smell. If you notice any of these signs, it’s best to discard the pasta. Sometimes it’s really hard to tell if pasta is bad, simply because it lasts so long!
How long does pasta last in the fridge?
With proper storage, dry pasta can last up to two years in the fridge. (Although there is no need to store it this way since it’s shelf stable.) Cooked pasta, on the other hand, can last in the fridge between 3-5 days.
To prevent it from drying out and absorbing any odors from other foods in the fridge, it is important that you use an airtight container. When reheating pasta, its texture might change a bit, so I recommend you reheat it gently in the microwave or on the stovetop with a little bit of water or sauce.
Can you store pasta in Ziploc bags?
Yes, you can definitely store pasta in Ziploc bags. Freezer-safe bags can provide airtight storage, which helps keep out moisture and maintain the freshness of the pasta. Make sure to press out any excess air before sealing the bag to minimize the risk of oxidation and spoilage. It’s also a good idea to label the bags with the type of pasta and the date of storage for easy identification.
The issue with storing pasta in plastic bags is that pests and rodents can easily get into them. I recommend other types of storage for storing longer term. Bags are fine if you have a small amount of an open box of pasta leftover.

How long is it safe to store pasta?
When stored properly, dry pasta can have a long shelf life. Typically, unopened dry pasta can be safely stored for 1-2 years past its expiration date. However, it’s important to note that the quality and taste of the pasta may gradually decline over time. To ensure the best quality, it’s recommended to consume stored pasta within the first year. Additionally, always check for any signs of spoilage or unusual odors before using stored pasta.
Now that you know how to store pasta long-term, you’ll have plenty on hand for all your favorite dishes. Pasta can be used in various recipes, from classic spaghetti and meatballs to creamy macaroni and cheese. Get creative in the kitchen and experiment with different sauces, vegetables, and proteins to create delicious meals using your stored pasta.
