Amish Honey Puffed Corn

So full confession, I’m not sure if this is an actual Amish recipe or not, BUT the only time our family has ever found Honey Puffed Corn for sale is when we lived in Amish country and bought it from the Amish and Mennonite stores.

So since we’ve only found it in those places, and that’s what it reminds me of, that’s what we call it in our home.

This recipe is super easy to make and only uses 3 ingredients. It’s somewhat similar to caramel corn but without any dairy ingredients and uses honey instead of corn syrup. The final product has a more delicate and delightful flavor than heavy caramel corn.

We started making this recipe a few years ago after I realized it was cheaper to buy the ingredients than to buy it from the store. It’s a great addictive little snack or road trip munchy.

Ingedients in Honey Puffed Corn

Ingredients in Honey Puffed Corn

  • Coconut Oil. Expeller-pressed coconut oil is best in this recipe, so it doesn’t add a coconut flavor. I buy mine in bulk.
  • Puffed Corn Cereal. You might be able to find this at your local grocery store, but if not, you can get it from Amazon too. If you don’t want to use corn, you could try something like these Kamut Puffs, although those would not be gluten-free. This is not the same as Corn Puffs cereal!
  • Honey. I buy this locally in bulk, but if you don’t have a local beekeeper, you can buy it in bulk from Azure.

FAQs About Honey Puffed Corn

Is puffed corn healthy?

It depends on the brand that you buy and what’s in it. The puffed popcorn stuff (sometimes called puffcorn) from the store is a little questionable and has quite a few preservatives. The Arrowhead Mills Puffed Corn cereal that I use in this recipe is only corn.

How do you store leftover puffed corn?

You can store any leftovers in a large airtight container or bag on the countertop. No need to refrigerate.

What if my puffed corn is still sticky?

It likely hasn’t been baked long enough. Put it back in the oven for a little while again so that the honey can form a nice shell around the puffed corn.

Instructions for Honey Puffed Corn

Step By Step Instructions for Making Homemade Honey Puffed Corn

Melt the coconut oil with the honey in the microwave in a glass container. You can also do this over the stovetop, but try not to let anything boil.

Place the puffed corn cereal in a large bowl and pour the honey mixture over the top. Stir so that everything is well coated.

Put a piece of parchment paper in the bottom of a baking sheet. I have these stone baking sheets that I got for a wedding gift and have had forever. You don’t need stone, but you do need something with sides. Spread it out in the pans as best as you can. Use multiple pans if necessary.

Bake at 250 degrees F for 45 minutes on the bottom rack of the oven, stirring the corn every 10 – 15 minutes to prevent burning.

Remove the snack from the oven when the time is up. Put parchment paper over your countertops and spread the snack over them as thinly as you can. Let the honey-puffed corn cool and dry for a while before enjoying it.

If you don’t eat the whole bowl at once (like my kids will!), store it in an airtight container or bag on the countertop.

Just made these. They’re delicious! They taste almost exactly like Corn Pops cereal. I even tried them with milk. Yum!
