I budget $200 per month for food (for 2 of us + some for baby who is not eating solids yet). I am allowed to add an extra $25 if we have it from my Irregular Income Budget Sheet. This month we got $225 for our food budget. (And for us a “month” is from the second pay check to the second paycheck if that makes any sense. The first check goes entirely to bills.) Note that “food budget” means health, beauty, food, and household items. I had way more trips to the grocery store this month than normal thanks to many many visits to town for various appointments. Here’s what I bought this month:
8/29: Walmart (shudder…) – $19
Diapers, Wipes, Razors, CHOCOLATE , Frozen Pancakes (I had coupons!)
8/29: Amazon – $20
Brown Rice Pasta (6 boxes)
9/2: Sam’s Club – $78
10lb Cheddar Cheese (the brand I normally buy was $2 cheaper per 5lb block so I stocked up, shredded and froze) 5lb mozarella cheese, 3lb sour cream, greek yogurt, 3lb chocolate chips, 4lb butter, 3lb pepperoni (yuck, for hubby only, lol)
9/17: Azure Standard Order (pictured above) – $209.80
3lb onions, 3 boxes cream cheese, 40lbs oranges, 5lbs pinto beans, 12 boxes brown rice pasta, 3 bags frozen butternut squash, produce wash, Piggy Paint, Veganaise, 50lbs turbinado sugar (yep, this is what put me over budget!)
Ouch. I definitely over-spent this month! I didn’t realize that I was totally out of sugar and the smaller packages were much more costly per pound. I also stocked up on extra pasta so we won’t have to buy any for quite a while.
I also bought:
8/29: Fruit Order – $50
25lbs apples, 25lbs pears
This was all to can for later month’s meals and came out of a different budget.
You might notice that I don’t have any meat (besides the chicken) on this month’s budget. We only buy meat a few times a month. I buy chickens when the Hutterites come to town every few months and we buy beef from my parents once or twice a year. We pay for that from savings or we barter for it.
Make sure to check out our meal plans for the last month to see what we actually ate!
I know that our food budget and possibly our eating habits are not conventional! Please feel free to ask me questions in the comments or by email.
