Gluten-Free Dry Onion Soup Mix

I love to make homemade spice blends, but only ones that I know we will use. While there are a bunch of good ones out there, I can’t keep them all on my countertop regularly.

One that we use all the time is Onion Soup Mix. This can be used to flavor various stews, meats, and other deliciousness. Because I make my own easy Onion Soup Mix recipe, I haven’t had to buy it from the grocery store in well over a decade.

Typically you can use Onion Soup mix in most homemade recipes that call for Beef Bouillon granules in the recipe. Not only have I not been able to find any of those that would work with our allergies, but it also doesn’t really save much money to have to add that to the recipe, AND most of the time I’m putting the onion soup mix in a recipe that already contains bone broth.

My recipe is super easy to make and only uses basic spices that you likely already have in your pantry. I’m skipping the bouillon granules and celery seed in this blend to only make it with easy-to-find ingredients. Make this recipe, and you won’t ever have to buy Onion Soup Mix again!

Why is Homemade Dry Onion Soup Mix Better?

Homemade Onion Soup mix is very affordable to make, plus it doesn’t contain ingredients like corn starch, yeast extract, corn syrup, soy, disodium guanylate, disodium inosinate, monosodium glutamate (MSG), sulfites, barley, caramel color, natural flavors, or anything else you’d rather not eat.

This homemade version is also naturally dairy-free and gluten-free. Plus, it just tastes so much better than store-bought!

I love your spices in a jar recipes. I hate the store bought but can usually find the good version on your blog! Thanks!

Ingredients in Onion Soup Mix

Ingredients in Gluten-Free Dry Onion Soup Mix

  • Dried Minced Onion. I always buy this in bulk, and it comes in handy! Azure or Costco has good prices for it.
  • Onion Powder. I don’t always buy onion powder in bulk because we often don’t go through it quickly, and it tends to clump. You can buy it in smaller sizes from Azure.
  • Garlic Powder. I use garlic granules instead of garlic powder because that works better universally for me. Any form will work in this recipe. I buy large amounts of garlic granules in bulk because we use so much.
  • Black Pepper & Sea Salt
  • Maple Sugar. Since I don’t eat cane sugar, I use maple sugar in recipes like this. You could also use coconut sugar or brown sugar, depending on what you have on hand.
  • Dried Parsley. Learn from my mistake, don’t buy parsley in a one pound bag! It will last you years…
  • Turmeric.

What to Make with Onion Soup Mix

  • Pot Roast is our favorite thing to make with an onion soup mix. We just put the roast and a little water or broth in the slow cooker. Then sprinkle some of the onion soup mix over the roast and into the liquid. Cook as usual.
  • Baked chicken with some onion soup mix stirred into some chicken stock poured over the top while baking.
  • You can mix some of the spice blend into sour cream with some mayo to make classic onion dip for a tasty chip or veggie onion dip.
  • Toss some olive oil and dry onion soup mix on potatoes before roasting for an extra flavorful side.
  • Spinkle onion soup mix over meatloaf before baking.

I love your spice mixes and convenience food mixes. I like to avoid the extra salt and chemicals in commercial products. I’m also retired and on a fixed income. It is so much better and cheaper to mix up my own blends. Thank you and keep them coming

Common Questions About Onion Soup Mix

Is Lipton Onion Soup Mix gluten free?

Some sources say that it is and some say that it’s uncertain. While there isn’t flour on the label, it’s all not labeled gluten-free. If you have celiac or severe wheat allergy issues I wouldn’t risk it. Especially not when the alternative is so easy to make!

How much is in one packet of onion soup mix?

If you are trying to replace a packet from the store, you can use this substitution instead. There are 3 tablespoons of onion soup mix in one packet.

Can you make Onion Soup with Onion Soup Mix?

I wouldn’t recommend it. Onion soup solely made from onion soup mix would be watery and not very flavorful (and too salty!). Here’s my recipe for French Onion Soup instead.

  3. This one is a big SCORE!
Onion soup mix had to disappear from my cupboard when I figured out that wheat and/or yeast extracts were triggering a couple of major health problems for me . Although I have learned different ways to flavor meals, especially meats, this will make it easier for my husband to flavor a roast with more than just garlic cloves. I will be making this as soon as I get the onion flakes…this weekend!
    Thank you for sharing, Merissa!

    1. I’m so glad this recipe will help! Same here…we needed to leave the store versions behind but we used them all the time! I’m glad to have something else we make now 🙂
