Gluten Free Sour Cream Cookies – Lemon

We love making cookies at our house because they aren’t as big of a time commitment as other desserts and it’s perfectly acceptable to eat them as a snack any time of day!

For these cookies I use dairy alternatives and gluten free flour to make them gluten and dairy free but you can use regular dairy products and regular wheat flour in these as well. They work great either way!

Gluten Free Sour Cream Cookies – Lemon

What You Need:

  • 1/2 cup butter, room temp (can use butter alternative)
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1 teaspoon lemon zest
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla
  • 1 large egg
  • 1/2 cup sour cream (can use dairy free yogurt)
  • 1 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 4 cups all-purpose flour (Or all purpose gluten free flour)

Lemon Cookie Batter
Cream the butter, sugar and lemon zest until light and fluffy. Add the egg, vanilla, and sour cream and mix until well incorporated. Add the flour, baking powder and salt.

Batter Rolled Out
Divide the dough in half and transfer each half onto a piece of parchment paper. Top each half of dough with another piece of parchment paper. Use a rolling pin or your hands to roll the dough out between the parchment to a little thicker an 1/4″ thick.

Cut Out Lemon Cookies
Line two sheet pans with parchment paper. Dip cookie cutters in flour and stamp out cookies in your desired shape. Transfer the cut out cookie onto the parchment lined baking sheets.

Baked Lemon Cookies
Bake for 6-8 mins at 350 degrees until the edges are firm and lightly browned. Allow the cookies to cool for 5 minutes on the baking sheets. Transfer to cooling racks to cool completely before frosting.

Lemon Frosting

To make the frosting you need:

  • 1 stick (1/2 cup) butter, room temp (can use butter alternative)
  • 2 cups powdered sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice
  • 2-3 tablespoons milk (or milk alternative)

In a bowl with an electric mixer, whip the frosting ingredients together until combined.

Frosting COokies

You can also add sprinkles or skip the lemon frosting and add vanilla cream cheese frosting instead.

    1. In place of egg in recipe you can substitute 1 Tablespoon of Regular (not whipped) Cream Cheese. The cream cheese will act as a binder

I tried the cookie recipe! It turned out so well that by the time I could take a picture of it, there was only one left!

  2. I would almost say these are baked in preheated 350 deg. oven which is normally the temperature that I bake my cookies at.
