Homemade Soft Naan Bread

There’s something extra comforting about pulling warm, soft naan bread off the skillet—pillowy, slightly chewy, and perfect for scooping up soups, sandwiches, or even just a swipe of butter and honey. This easy homemade naan recipe gives you that softness using simple pantry ingredients, no special equipment required. Once you try making naan from scratch, you may never go back to store-bought again.

Homemade Soft Naan Bread Recipe
My kids are totally hooked on this recipe right now. We’ve been making it for the last couple of months, and it’s our favorite when used in a sandwich (especially in the car since it doesn’t crumble!) with Egg Salad, or just to eat with a little butter and honey.
It does take a little bit of time to make since you have to let the dough rise, and then you will need to cook each naan individually (unless you have a big griddle!) but it’s well worth it. This recipe will make 12 nice-sized pieces, or you can double it and freeze the extras for later.

Ingredients in Soft Naan Bread
Here are the basic ingredients in this recipe:
- All Purpose or Bread Flour – Either will work in this recipe. I use bread flour because that’s what I have on hand.
- Butter – Salted or unsalted is fine. You want the butter to be melted, but not hot or it will cook your egg and kill your yeast.
- Yeast – Regular instant yeast or anything similar is what we use in this recipe.
- Egg – You’ll need a nice large egg for this recipe. I use a duck egg since we have ducks.
- Milk – Any type of milk (whole, low fat, etc) will work here!
- Sugar – This is to help your yeast grow nice and quickly. It does not effect taste.
- Salt – This is for flavor. I use pink salt.
Supplies for Making Soft Naan Bread
Here’s what I use when making this bread. You can probably use a regular large frying pan but I’ve only used cast iron.
Step by Step Instructions for Making Soft Naan Bread
Start by making your dough. Bloom the yeast first (mix the warm water, yeast, and sugar) and set aside. Add all the other ingredients to a large bowl before adding the yeast in. Mix together until everything is well incorporated. The dough make feel sticky and that’s ok. Set it in a bowl with a cover and let it rest and rise for at least an hour.

After the rise time, remove the dough from the bowl and place on a floured surface. Separate into 12 pieces using a dough cutter or your hands. The dough is somewhat sticky and you’ll have to use a little flour to handle it.

Roll out each ball with a rolling pin. You may need more flour to keep it from sticking.

Heat up your griddle or frying pan. You shouldn’t need any oil on a well-seasoned cast iron. Place the flat dough on the pan like you would a tortilla. It should immediately bubble. Leave on the original side for about 30 seconds.

Flip the naan and leave it for an additional 15-30 seconds.

Remove the naan from heat and place on a plate. Continue all the steps with the next piece until all the bread is cooked. Enjoy warm or room temp!

I can’t wait to try this! They usually go bad so quick that I end up throwing most of the pack out by the time I get to it. This way I can just make them when I need them!
Hi Marissa I made these today. I call them pita or kangaroo bread.
I did have a little trouble with them sticking together after cutting in half and trying to open them. If you have any tips… Delicious taste tho with peanut butter and jam.
Do you know if gluten free flour would work in this recipe?
I have not tried it, sorry.
I am curious, have you tried making this gluten and dairy free? I’m not sure it would work the same.
I haven’t. Yeast products just don’t seem to convert the same as a quick product (with baking powder) for gluten free.
