So the other day I was at Walmart when I passed by the baby clothes section and had to check it out of course. (Who can resist those cute little things?) I knew my little guy could use some sleepers in his size so I picked up the one on the left in the picture for $5.50 plus tax. I didn’t think it was too bad of a price since I’d seen sleepers at Target and Sears for at least $9.99 or more.
Of course this past weekend you could find me out rummage saling. I happened across a sale of my favorite kind. I was greeted at the front of the garage with a big paper bag and a “Fit all you can into the bag for just $5!” The first thing that went through my mind was, “Do you know how many size 0-3 month onesies I can fit in a bag!?”
I picked up all the baby items on the right side of the picture for only $5. Actually less than that because I also found 4 pairs of scrubs for my sister that I had filling up my bag. If you look closely you will find 19 baby outfits, 4 pairs of socks, and 1 baby tie…that was too cute and funny to pass up. All in excellent condition. (The owner told me her little guy only wore them once before he outgrew it all.)
This is why you don’t pay retail for kids clothing!

My 3 are adults now, but I’ve always been a fan of thrift stores and yard sales – saved tons of $’s
that is so true!..kids don’t really care, either!
I rarely buy new only when I come across a super clearance deal!
I used to purchase my clothes this way, when my older 3 were little. Not any more. There is so much fragrance in the used clothes from detergents and fabric softeners that I can purchase new cheaper than washing the items 8-10 times, all of my detergent that goes into it, the cost of drying them and still end up not being able to use them. On top of that I am sick by the time I have handled the fragranced items that much. It works for some but not for everyone. I wish people could come to a very old fashioned thinking that if it is clean it doesn’t need to be fragranced too.
As fast as my son grows, there’s no way I’m buying clothes or shoes at full price. Super clearance deals and yard sales
Sandy..I agree with the fabric softener, etc…What is in that stuff that it takes so many times of washing to get it out?..Any ideas on how to remove it?
I agree Sandy, I run into that issue too. My laundry detergent has been pretty good at getting it out but I do have to wash a few times.
The vast majority of my son’s stuff is second-hand, but I buy a fair amount new on clearance or on sale. He has waaay too many clothes :o)
They are truly toxic chemicals. There are litterally 1000s of chemicals in our laundry, personal and cleaning items and very few of them have been tested for safety for humans. It is sad. I believe that there are ones who are truly addicted to them.
Never had the problem of too much stuff in used clothes to be able to wear them. I for 30 yrs. have, and still will, buy used stuff. wash once and done. Why do people need fabric softener, dryer sheets and such anyway. just wash and dry either on the line or dryer. SOOOO much cheaper without those things.
I buy used, and I’m also blessed with several neighbors/friends who think of us when it’s time to do “hand-me-downs” 🙂
And not so many chemicals to put in our bodies.
Used is great, but there are very few sales where you come across kids clothes at garage sale prices.
I like to buy used my son is 2 and we havent had to buy any clothes for him thanks to friends and family other than shoes and those i will always buy new anything else can be used
I don’t pay retail because personally it doesn’t make sense. Just last year I bought from LANDS END 7 articles of clothing for my daughter and 6 articles of clothing (sweaters, jeans, turtle necks, shorts, jackets and coats and leggings) all for $65.00. That was 13 articles of clothing for almost $4.00 a piece plus I went through ebates and got 5% back! So it was a good deal and I always buy either used or wait until the end of season sales. You just can’t beat it – oh plus I got a bathing suit for $6.97 that was normall $75.00!!
I buy new because a) the stuff at consignment stores here is nothing I want my daughter wearing b) I can get new clothing for almost the same price on sale and it normally will last my daughter 2-3 years this way I can get a bunch from the same brands and she can mix and match it all.
I only buy new if it’s clearance…and I mean cheap clearance, other wise I hit consignement sales/stores, thrift stores and yard sales.
Garage sales seem to be the best buy around here, but our Goodwill sells brand new shoes from Target, so you can’t beat that! 🙂
For the earth’s sake, I would buy all organic, humanely-made stuff, but since I’m not rich, lol, I do thrift and garage sales first. Its harder since we moved to Eagle Butte, because there’s fewer choices. I miss Trendz Consignment Studios in Brookings a lot!
