Looking for a simple recipe that you can toss together in your slow cooker this week? This is the best 4 Ingredient Crockpot Chicken Recipe because it's so simple and uses only real food ingredients!

I’m on a new mission lately to create some tasty meals that only need a few ingredients. I have quite a few on my list that our family is testing right now, but today I’m excited to share this one with you.

Sometimes you just need an easy recipe that you can toss together in a few minutes, put in the crockpot, and then not have to worry about it again until supper time. This is one of those recipes! We also put this recipe together so that it can be easily modified to fit allergy needs if your family is anything like ours.

This recipe does not contain “cream of chicken soup” like many similar recipes. We will be making our own with just a few basic ingredients.

This Crockpot Chicken recipe uses just 4 main ingredients and then others can be added to give it a better flavor for serving. I love that the simplicity of the ingredients leaves it somewhat of a “blank slate” so that you can make it taste good for your family.

Chicken Broth

Ingredients in Crockpot Chicken

  • Onion.
  • Chicken Broth. I use homemade chicken broth in all of my recipes but you can use store-bought if that is what you have. Vegetable broth will give it a nice flavor too.
  • Milk/Cream. Use regular dairy if you can have it. For dairy free, replace the milk or cream with coconut milk or cream. Also, you can add some cream cheese in place of the milk if you want your sauce to be a little thicker!
  • Chicken Breast. Boneless Skinless Chicken Breasts work best in this recipe but if you only have skinless chicken thighs or something else, it will still taste good!

Optional Ingredients:

You don’t have to have these ingredients to make this meal but they are highly recommended to give this dish some flavor!

  • Salt & Pepper.
  • Parsley.
  • Italian Seasoning.
  • Taco Seasoning.
  • Cheese.
  • Garlic.

FAQS About Slow Cooker Chicken

Can you cook chicken in the crockpot without any liquid?

I would not recommend cooking chicken without any liquid. The chicken will likely burn to the bottom of the crockpot giving it a poor taste and making your slow cooker very hard to clean.

Is it better to cook chicken on high or low in the crockpot?

It depends on when you need supper and the type of recipe you are cooking. Chicken will usually be tender when cooked either way (on high or low). For this particular recipe, I cook it on low because of the ingredients and because I don’t need it to cook any faster.

Do you need to brown chicken before slow cooking?

Sometimes browning meat before adding it to the slow cooker will give it more flavor in the final product. It’s optional though depending on what you have time for and if you want to dirty another pan first.

What to Serve With The Slow Cooker Chicken Recipe

This chicken is best when serve over egg noodles or another kind of highly absorbent pasta. It also would work well with white or brown rice.

If you don’t want to serve over pasta, you could serve the meat in a bun for a sandwich, or even in tortillas with some black beans and Spanish rice and salsa for a totally different take.

A good side dish for this recipe is a lettuce salad or your favorite vegetables roasted in the oven with a bit of seasoning on them. You could even do a Thanksgiving-style take on this recipe by serving it with stuffing.
