What We Did This Week: Bulk Food, Fall Baking, and Ducks!

This week was another beautiful fall week here at our off-grid home! We started out the week by mostly missing an aurora, but I still got a pretty picture of the night sky.

Over the weekend, David brought us home some new animal friends… 6 Khaki Campbell ducks! I love having ducks (more than chickens!), and we put together a little pen for the girls to get used to their space and the dogs. We plan on letting them out soon to enjoy all the bugs. 🙂

They must be happy here so far because they are already laying eggs! This will help us out greatly as eggs have been really hard to get here.

David brought a box of tomatoes back to us from my mom so I used them all to make taco sauce.

I ended up with 20 jelly jars of sauce, plus some I put in the fridge to eat now. Here’s my Taco Sauce recipe.

Small Cat waited outside this week for his feathered friends, but they all seem to be gone for the season already. It’s getting pretty quiet up here!

I had a baking day mid-week and I made a batch of Zucchini Cookies. We put half in the freezer and ate half this week.

I also made a double batch of calzones. These are a family favorite! I use our favorite Pizza Crust recipe for the dough and I’ll have the rest of the recipe on our YouTube channel on Sautrday.

It was a rather rainy and dreary week here but with views like this we can’t complain. Most of the aspen trees have started turning but not the ones in the front of our place. I think because they have extra water (small stream) in the valley.

We had a fire every day this week. Small Cat loved it! This is his favorite place to be.

One day this week we had to run into town for some errands. We stopped in the Amish store to see if they had anything new and to pick up some milk.

We didn’t get outside as much as I wanted to this week but we did our best. The maple trees are getting really pretty! (And the baby is getting really snuggly!)

I made a new recipe for Cinnamon Swirl Bread this week and we had it for a couple of breakfasts this week. It was so good and another family favorite! I’ll also have this recipe on our YouTube channel this weekend.

My Azure order came in this week as well. I didn’t have a very big order but did get a few cases of produce (one of which was not good 🙁 ) and a couple of other things we needed. Here’s an example of one of my bigger Azure orders, and here’s a post I wrote for Azure beginners.

At the end of the week, my littlest man helped me can up some applesauce from apples that my mom gave me. After he ate a bunch that is…. 🙂

We ended up with 12 pints of applesauce (nothing added) to add to our root cellar. That brings my total up to 308 jars I’ve canned this summer. My goal was 300 jars this year (down from 500-800 in past years because I had a baby!) so I was happy to achieve that!
Today is also a special day here because it’s our “house-a-versary”! We bought and moved to our off grid home one year ago today.
I’ll update you all again next week!
-Merissa

You said that one of the cases of produce was bad from your Azure order. How are they with replacement/refund or is that even a thing with them? I’ve been back and forth about using them as many of the dried bulk items I purchase I find comparable quality/price around me (I’m in a fairy large city), but I would be interested to know in general what the customer service experience is like. Especially with fresh produce. Thanks!
The key to good customer service with them is to email them right away on anything wrong with your order. I sent them pictures of the bad produce as soon as we got home with it and I got credit to my account within 12 hours of sending the email.
Beautiful. Thank you Merissa.
You are such a blessing. Thank you for doing this, Merissa!
Lovely post -so calming! I’m looking forward to watching your YouTube channel.
Going to try your taco sauce. And the cinnamon bread. Yum. Haven’t baked any since kids all left home. Definitely will be making it again! Excited about your YouTube show. Already subscribed! Thanks for sharing.
Happy house-a-versary❣️
Good job! I loved your post. Thank you for sharing!
