Chocolate Muffin Mix Recipe

There is just something about a chocolate muffin that makes it so much more tempting to me than all of the rest. I have a feeling that thing is….. chocolate. When I imagine the perfect Chocolate Muffin, it is full of rich chocolate flavor in a moist muffin. I’ve spent many years trying to figure out how to make the perfect Chocolate Muffin Mix because all of the muffins usually turn out dry or don’t have that strong flavor I’m hoping for.

I think you will love this simple Chocolate Muffin Recipe I’ve finally settled on. It’s easy to make and store in your pantry until the day comes when you want to enjoy a yummy muffin. Plus, these muffins stay moist for days thanks to the addition of sour cream in this recipe. They also freeze well, so you can have them on hand for a quick snack or breakfast anytime.

Ingredients in Chocolate Muffin Mix Recipe

What You Need:

  • All Purpose Flour or All Purpose Gluten Free Flour. Either type of flour has been tested and will work in this recipe!
  • Unsweetened Chocolate Cocoa Powder. You don’t need sweetened cocoa powder because we are using sugar in this mix recipe.
  • Baking Powder and Baking Soda. Using both rising agents will help to give these muffins that “bakery style” look.
  • Salt. Salt in baking recipes helps brings out the flavor. I wouldn’t skip this ingredient unless you need to.
  • Chocolate Chips. Milk chocolate or semi-sweet chocolate chips will both work in this recipe. The addition of the chocolate chips makes these true double chocolate muffins!
  • Sugar. I use cane sugar in this recipe, but you might be able to use an alternative like coconut sugar.

Instructions for Making the Chocolate Muffin Mix

Combine all of the above dry ingredients in a large bowl. Divide the mixture into 2 equal portions and pour into some kind of air-tight storage container. I prefer to use Mason Jars closed with a Plastic Storage Lid. This Chocolate Muffin Mix will store for up to a year if kept in a cool, dry place with the lid in place.

  1. These look delicious! Thank you for sharing your recipe! I love that they don’t have a ton of sugar either. Will be making some today as I have some chocolate chips to use up!

  2. I’m a bit confused the recipe says

1/4 cup Vegetable Oil (melted coconut oil or a milk olive oil work great)

Is that milk? Or milk olive oil which I’ve never heard of

    1. These sound delicious! I like to use applesauce in place of oil when I use store-bought muffin mixes. Would that work here?

  8. These look so yummy! I am going to make them this afternoon. I will make them with goat yogurt so they are milk-free for my family member who can’t have cow’s milk. Thank you for the recipe!

  9. I made these & while mixing it was too dry to combine so i added another 1/4 cup of sour cream & then it was better. Turned out really good and moist.

These muffin were so easy and delicious. I only made half the batch but it turned out spectacular. I also had to substitute the cocoa power for something I had in my cupboard which was ice chocolate topping used the same amount needed and it for half the batch and it worked perfect and came out just as delicious. Will be definitely using this recipe again.

I found this recipe last night when I was desperate to find something to make for my kids this morning (Friday special breakfast to end the week with extra joy, you know). This recipe fit the bill AND gave me a whole other batch’s worth of dry mix for next time I want to make muffins. I made mini muffins and cooked them for 12 minutes. The kids enjoyed them, and there were enough to put a couple extras in their lunches for dessert!
